This, the 5th World Pro Gi Jiu Jitsu Championship, will be held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in Abu Dhabi in the UAE from the 11th til the 13th of April.

This event has a very strong line up in the Brown and Black Belt categories, with some notable players seemingly missing the Pans this year to focus on this event. The prize money on offer here may well have been a factor.

This year’s edition also sees the previously combined Brown and Black Belt divisions split up, Brown Belts everywhere breathe a sigh of relief…

Open
  • Reigning Champion: Rodolfo Vieira
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Marcus Vinícius "Buchecha"
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Marcus Vinícius "Buchecha"
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Claudio Calasans
  • CBJJE Pans Champion: Leandro Lo
  • Brasilieros Champion: Nivaldo de Oliveira
  • European Champion: Leo Nogueira
  • Contenders: Everybody…
  • What might happen: Depending on the bracketing, I would think the likely final would be Rodolfo Vieira vs Marcus “Buchecha” and given his current form I’d tip Buchecha to take it this time.

Ultra Heavy
  • +100kg Reigning Champion: Marcus Vinícius "Buchecha"
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Marcus Vinícius "Buchecha"
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Marcus Vinícius "Buchecha"
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Kallil Leão
  • CBJJE Pans Champion:  Moises Junior
  • Brasilieros Champion: Alexander Riis Hilligsoe Trans
  • European Champion: Alexander Trans
  • Contenders: Roberto Abreu “Cyborg”, Ricardo Evangelista, Marcus Vinícius "Buchecha", Rodrigo Cavaca
  • What might happen: A reasonably strong field but I can’t see anyone beating Buchecha here.

Super Heavy
  • -100kg Reigning Champion: Xande Ribeiro
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Leo Nogueira
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Leo Nogueira
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Filippi Mattos
  • CBJJE Pans Champion:  Afranio de Sousa
  • Brasilieros Champion: Leo Nogueira
  • European Champion: Bernardo Faria
  • Contenders: Antonio Braga Neto, Joao Rocha, Luiz Panza,
  • What might happen: Having been beaten by “Buchecha” in the +100kg final last year, Braga Neto has dropped a weight class and I would expect him to take this title.

Heavy
  • -94kg Reigning Champion: Rodolfo Vieira
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Roberto Alencar
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Rodolfo Vieira
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Bruno de Oliveira
  • CBJJE Pans Champion: Rodrigo Ribeiro
  • Brasilieros Champion: Alexandro Ceconi
  • European Champion: Dimitrius Souza
  • Contenders: Paulo Jardim, Rodolfo Vieira, Roberto “Tussa” Alencar
  • What might happen: He may have missed the Pans and Europeans this year, but 5 time World Pro Gi Champion Rodolfo is surely too much for either Paulo or Roberto.

Medium Heavy
  • -88kg Reigning Champion: Andre Galvao
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Andre Galvao
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Romulo Barral
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Renato Cardoso
  • CBJJE Pans Champion:  Renato Cardoso
  • Brasilieros Champion: Nivaldo de Oliveira
  • European Champion: Romulo Barral
  • Contenders: Romulo Barral, Andre Galvao, Tarsis Humphreys
  • What might happen: In Barral, Tarsis and Galvao we have 2 men who between them have won multiple titles at the Pans, Mundials, Brasilieros and WPG. Tarsis is a little more out of form than the other two, I’d expect Barral and Galvao to feature in the final (depending on bracketing) with Galvao the likely winner.

Middle
  • -82kg Reigning Champion: Claudio Calasans
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Clark Gracie
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Otavio Souza
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Adriano Silva
  • CBJJE Pans Champion: Leandro Lo
  • Brasilieros Champion: Murilo Santana
  • European Champion: Claudio Calasans
  • Contenders:  Guto Campos, Claudio Calasans, Dealonzio “DJ” Jackson, Alan “FinFou” Nascimento, Victor Estima, Renato Cardoso
  • What might happen: 4 time medalist here, Claudio Calasans will be the favourite to add to his medal haul and whilst the field is pretty strong, none of the other competitors tend to fare well against him.

Light
  • -76kg Reigning Champion: Roberto Satoshi
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Michael Langhi
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Leandro Lo
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Caio Almeida
  • CBJJE Pans Champion: Tiago Barros
  • Brasilieros Champion: Leandro Lo
  • European Champion: Michael Langhi
  • Contenders: Rodrigo Caporal, Lucas Lepri, Roberto “Satoshi” De Souza, Carlos Vieira “Portugues”,  Leandro Lo,  Bruno Alves, Vinicius Marinho, JT Torres
  • What might happen: A very strong field here, with regining champ “Satoshi” Souza facing familiar faces Leandro Lo, Lucas Lepri and JT Torres in his bid to win back to back titles. Lo and Marinho both fought at Middleweight at the Pans (Marinho actually beating Lo in the process) leaving the Alliance pairing of Langhi and Lepri to close out the final. When on form at this weight, Lo should be the favourite, but this is once again a hard division to call and bracketing may well play a key role.

Feather
  • -70kg Reigning Champion: Samuel Canquerinho
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Rafael Mendes
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Rafael Mendes
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Mario Reis
  • CBJJE Pans Champion:  Edson Oliveira
  • Brasilieros Champion: Leonardo Fernandes Saggioro
  • European Champion: Rubens Charles Maciel
  • Contenders: Theodoro Canal, Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes, Rubens “Cobrinha”
  • What might happen:  With no Mendes Brothers present here, the final will probably see Cobrinha against Augusto “Tanquinho”. I think Tanquinho may just take it here given the slightly higher weight allowance.

Light Feather
  • -64kg Reigning Champion: Fernando Vieira
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Guilherme Mendes
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Guilherme Mendes
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: Giusley Santos
  • CBJJE Pans Champion:  Hamilton Caminha
  • Brasilieros Champion: José Tiago
  • European Champion: Laercio Fernandes
  • Contenders: Samuel Canquerino, Bruno Lopes, Yamada Yoshihiro
  • What might happen: Returning champion at the higher weight of -70kg, Samuel Canquerino should prevail here.

Rooster
  • Reigning Champion: n/a
  • IBJJF Pans Champion: Caio Terra
  • IBJJF Mundials Champion: Bruno Malfacine
  • CBJJE Mundials Champion: n/a
  • CBJJE Pans Champion:  n/a
  • Brasilieros Champion: Igor Rodrigues dos Santos
  • European Champion: Brandon Mullins
  • Contenders: n/a
  • What might happen:  n/a

I watched the pans but not sure i know vinicius marinho. I thought Lo lost to vitor henrique and orlando.

What is going on with Lo? He competed up at pan and lost. And left brazil and is in calif. Did he move?

Lo usually does leve but since wpg is -76 and leve is -73 I guess he planned to come in on weight at -76 (ESP since they win actual money at the wpg)

I've clearly confused my GF team fighters, marinho has fought at middle (won the nogi brasilieros last year) so probably source of my confusion. Phone Post 3.0

List of all those participating, just scroll down till you find what you need.

No Mendes brothers, Leandro Lo or Satoshi from what I see.

Leandro Lo is Leandro Nascimento

Roberto Satoshi is Roberto De Souza (now competing under Atos)

nobadanymore -  Is it possible to watch? Phone Post

yes, it's broadcast on a sports channel in the UAE. they do a great job with it. just have to find out exactly which channel and there should be an online stream somewhere.

however, it starts at 2am Eastern Time on thursday morning.

However, expect to have matches, even black belt finals, interrupted with coverage of local winners (like last year, interruption of black belt absolute finals IIRC to interview purple belt absolute champion, who was from abu dhabi)

All the brown belts should be thanking that local brown belt... He is probably the main reason they divided brown and black!

that was horrible. i think they interviewed the white belt absolute winner in the middle of Xande vs Bernardo.

Open hard to call, but basically comes down to who can stop Buchecha and on current form, im not sure any of Braga, Rodolfo or Galvao can do it.

Having said that Buchecha got tapped by Davi Ramos in the open last year iirc, so anything can happen...
