For the past 6 months I have focussed heavily on healthy eating. In the interest of being thorough, when I say healthy I mean juicing, smoothies, organic produce, loads of raw foods whenever possible, almost nothing fried, even when I cheat. But I do have about 20% cheat intake each week. That's up from 10% healthy and 90% cheat before. My cheat meals usually factor more dairy than normal, and grilled meats like burgers or steak.
But I've been spending way too much money. I bought a $9 box of crackers recently for fucksakes. My hot bar meal at Whole Foods was $18. Juicing sometimes runs me $30/day. I took a stab at grocery shopping for the entire week last month and spent $110 on what ended up being 4-days food. I'm not eating excessive calories - I'm eating excessive dollars.
So it got me thinking about seriously limiting my budget and perhaps most importantly, resetting my mindset and getting the fuck back to reality.
But the real challenge is going to be feeling good while doing it. Is it possible to eat healthy on $30/week when you live in St Louis? That's the real challenge.

Depends on your size and appetite.
Rice, cans of tuna/Salmon, beans, spaghetti, couple of potatoes, eggs and with the rest get vegetables.

Unpeeled whole carrots are cheap, as is broccoli. Bag of generic cheerios ad half gallon of store brand milk. Chicken thighs or legs. Rice is cheap too. And grape drink.

Buy a whole chicken ($3-6) and then ether roast it or quarter it and cook each quarter as you need. Make pasta dish with one hind quarter, grill one breast, make stir fry with the other, and get crazy with the last hind quarter. Save the bones and other bits and turn it into stock to make a vegetable soup for lunch. That is 4 to 6 meals depending on how you spread things out.
Other things you should buy to have on hand:
Rice
Potatoes
Flour
Eggs
Sugar
butter
With just the last four on the list you can make so many things.
Look up "traditional" or "ethnic" meals. Most people in the world don't have money, so they already have meals designed to be cheap.
Pancakes are a very inexpensive and easy thing to make for breakfast. Don't buy the mix though. It is more expensive and doesn't really save you any time.
Biscuits are inexpensive and easily made from scratch. A great way to fill out a meal.
The more time you spend preparing food the cheaper it will be.
