Vitor choose not to fight Mousasi

by Tom Ngo | source: 5thround.com

Affliction Entertainment had it all laid out. Their sights were set on a sick catch-weight scrap between former UFC champ Vitor Belfort and former Dream middleweight king Gegard Mousasi. However, Belfort pumped the breaks on the bout immediately upon hearing that it wasn’t going to happen in Mousasi’s best weight class.

“I think that we [offered] him the catch weight, Mousasi was willing to come down to 195, we wanted Vitor to go up to 195, which wasn’t heavy,” Atencio told 5thRound.com in an exclusive interview. “So it was Vitor’s choice. Vitor chose not to take the fight. We’re still gonna have him on the card. No, it was completely up to Vitor.”

The 32-year-old Belfort seems to have found his stride once again, walking away victorious in five out of his last six scraps, including his last four. Perhaps that is why he didn’t want to roll the dice by facing one of MMA’s hottest fighters.

“I thought personally, it wouldn’t have hurt his record [if he were to lose to Mousasi] because he would have been at a catch-weight,” Atencio told us. “I think he’s been doing really well at 185, but once again, that was his choice.”

“No, that’s why I don’t understand, why he didn’t take it. It was a win-win for him.”

"Not just $. Its a stature thing to. Lets say he takes a beating vs Fedor, but last the whole fight or takes him almost all 3 rounds.IMO that is worth more to his reputation than if he were to fuck Gegard up in a couple of minutes. "This is true and losing to Mousasi (the likely outcome) would set him back a bit but losing to Fedor does a whole lot less so because he's going to be a big underdog.

Mousasi had no upside. No name recognition, no ranking. Why fight him, especially when Mousasi was telling Vitor that HE would have to move up to LHW. I don't blame Vitor for refusing that fight. The Fedor fight has way more upside. More pay, Fedor is the biggest name in MMA, plus he's no. 1 ranked.

screw all this catch weight stuff. If Vitor wants to compete at 185 good for him.

Vitor is a natural HW in that he began his career there at 18, whether steroid induced or not.  He also probably walked around at HW up until very recently.  Going from doing everything to bulk up to slimming down a little and making LHW consistently to then shredding yourself down to MW is not easy, especially for a guy as prone to slip-ups as Vitor.  I think marching back to 195 would've been an obvious disadvantage for him, especially when he's probably walking at about 200 right now.

You know, Vitor has been through a lot of ups and downs since he has been a fighter. I am not trying to stick up for the guy but he has fought bigger guys in the past. (Alistair Overeem twice, who is a true heavy weight). Look, He is doing well a MW. I am sure he just wants to fight at MW and see where it takes him. Fight guys closer to his own weight and make a run at it. If this is the case, I don't blame him.
