Was the Cyborg v Carano stoppage correct?

Carano vs. Santos Stoppage Ref Cam Strikeforce

From Dave Meltzer

Santos took over late in the round and with the clock ticking down, she was pounding on Carano. In a somewhat controversial decision, referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the match with less than a tick left in the round, and until Santos celebrated by jumping on the top of the cage, much of the crowd thought it was the end of the round as opposed to the end of the fight.

The stoppage would not have been controversial if there were 20 seconds left in the fight. Clearly, a stoppage based on the pounding Carano had taken, under most circumstances, wouldn’t have even been an issue. The only issue is that there was one second left in the round, and at that point perhaps Carano should have at least been given the opportunity to use her one-minute rest period before the start of the second round.

"Under any other circumstances I would say it was justified stoppage..however, when it is literally the very last second in the round then it shouldn't have been stopped."Silly argument, should the ref be watching the clock instead of the fight or should they retroactively let it pass? Are you going to pay the medical bills for any unnecessary damage caused in the last couple of seconds of a round, say if someone is brain damaged or killed due to one more blow?Carano was done anyway - she went fetal because she plain didn't want to be there any more.

The ref is not paid to worry about how much time is left in the round. I think the stoppage was fine. Gina was not intelligently defending herself, thus the fight was stopped.

One more second and another round could be the difference between a few bruises and brain damage. The ref is there to protect the athletes, not give fans "one more round" of action.

I would have rather seen it go down like that instead of Gina quitting in between rounds.

PERFECT stoppage. Gina was not doing anything to intelligently protect herself & taking a lot of unanswered punches. If Rosenthal would have let the fight go to the 2nd round, people would be bitching that he was biased in favor of Carano.

Sure, I would have to liked to have seen Carano get pwned for another 45 seconds to 1 minute

I actually thought she was done earlier when Cyborg kneed her in the gut standing and Gina just collapsed.
