Commission suspends Metro MMA activity

Local mixed martial arts fans will have to travel further to watch live bouts.

The Moncton Boxing and Wrestling Commission has ruled there will be no mixed martial arts cards in Moncton for the next six months. There have been seven MMA events here in the past three years and the sport has enjoyed a growing fan base locally.

"After three years of sanctioning MMA events in the City of Moncton, the Moncton Boxing and Wrestling Commission has decided to do a complete review of the events that have been held here," said commission chairman Jerry Doiron-Gould.

"For the next six months, we will not be sanctioning any MMA cards in Moncton. Once that period is over, we will then make a decision on whether to continue sanctioning MMA events here."

Doiron-Gould wouldn't discuss what prompted the commission to do a review of past MMA events in Moncton.

Moncton is the only place in New Brunswick that can legally have a mixed martial arts card because there's no commission elsewhere in the province. The decision to suspend MMA activity here comes at an interesting time.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has enlisted the services of former Ontario premier David Peterson's law firm to change Section 83 of the Criminal Code of Canada. Ontario interprets the code differently than other provinces and this has proven to be a major obstacle for MMA.

The UFC also plans to stage a card in Vancouver next June if it can get approval from city council. It has already met with B.C. Attorney General Mike de Jong.

Meanwhile, the second phase of The Next Great Heavyweight competition takes place tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the CEPS Building on the Université de Moncton campus. It's an elimination style pro boxing tournament designed to help revive the sport locally.

Promoter Dwayne Storey initially announced that he would have pro boxing and MMA on this card, something that would've been a first in the Maritimes. But that plan was cancelled when the university announced it won't allow MMA events on campus.
