Sokoudjou vs. Gegard Mousasi Planned for Strikeforce on CBS

by Michael David Smith | source: mma.fanhouse.com

A fight between Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Gegard Mousasi failed to materialize in the Dream Super Hulk Tournament in Japan, but it is now expected to take place in Illinois and be broadcast by CBS as part of the November 7 Strikeforce/M-1 Global card.

FanHouse has learned that Strikeforce has submitted the Sokoudjou-Mousasi fight to Illinois' athletic commission, and pending approval, the fight will take place on the undercard of the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers CBS show. Mousasi is the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, but this will be a non-title fight, even though the fight will be contested at the light heavyweight limit of 205 pounds.

Strikeforce has also submitted a heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva also for approval to the Illinois commission. That fight could be a little trickier to get commission approval because it would be Silva's first fight in the United States since his suspension in California for failing a steroid test in July 2008, but Werdum-Silva is expected to be approved as well.

Mousasi will keep this fight standing and embarrass Sokoujou

Agreed 100% I am a big fan of Soko, but facing the top guys so early has made him do nothing but always swing for the fences until he has gassed. Facing these big guys in Super Hulk a few things have looked better with his patience, and showed some good knee on belly. I would of liked to see him fight a few mid tier guys of his own size and show his evolution as a fighter before he is back with the top guys in the sport.

Agreed. When the only title in the entire promotion that's been successfully defended in the last 16 months is an interim title, putting a titleholder in a non-title match is criminally stupid. Not that non-title matches ever aren't stupid, but in this case it's particularly stupid.

Yeah they should obviously make this matchup between Fedor and Rogers a title fight.  Also, for those complaining that Sokoudjou isn't a good enough matchup, just be thankful it's not Bobby Southworth or something, Strikeforce doesn't have many options.

I agree about the title thing, if the bout is at 205 then it should definitely be a title bout, no excuses for that. It doesn't dampen my excitement for the card though because the Strikeforce LHW title has no meaning whatsoever to me, the only Strikeforce title with meaning is the HW because of Fedor. Mousasi isn't better than Lyoto, Shields/Mayhem aren't better than Anderson, Diaz/whoever isn't better than GSP, no LW is better than BJ but yes Fedor is still the top HW.

The card itself is fine, it's just the inept treatment of titles and titleholders that annoys me.
