Din Thomas v Ricardo Mayorga at Shine III March 2010

source: mmamania.com

Former UFC lightweight Din Thomas will welcome former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga to the world of mixed martial arts when the two clash at the upcoming third event from the Shine Fights promotion, which is expected to go down in March 2010 at a venue to be named.

MMAmania.com confirmed the match-up earlier today.

"Dinyero" was a top contender in the stacked UFC 155-pound division prior to back-to-back losses to Kenny Florian (because he blew out his knee during the fight) and Josh Neer. Following that, Thomas announced his desire to compete at 145 pounds.

He never got the chance.

Thomas was given his pink slip in May 2008 along with Travis Lutter, David Heath, Kalib Starnes, Joe Doerksen and John Halverson. Since then, he scored a submission win (triangle choke) over Dustin Pierkin at Headhunter Productions "The Patriot Act" back in February followed by a TKO victory (knee) over Gabe Lemley at "March Badness" just over a month later.

no point in even risking mayorga getting a lucky punch. it doesnt matter how dins mma boxing is. yes, it would make a good statement to ko him, but its not worth the risk of boxers and boxing promoters bragging about how boxing is so much greater than mma. please din, just take him down, ground and pound the shit outta him and get a vicious tko or gnp him and submit him embarassingly quick. it will make much more of a statement than trying to stand with him. it will show, yet again, that mma is far superior to boxing in a fight. anyway, most boxing enthusiasts still think you can easily counter any takedown with a well timed punch yes, its been proven before, but timber set mma back some in boxings eyes. anyway, its always good to emphasize that point, and who knows how many people will be watching this one. probably more than mercer sylvia.

not only is din an incredible boxer but he has been adapting his boxing to mma much longer. think about it. shit changes when u cant hide behind all that leather. din can submit him whenever he wants but i expect he will pop him a few times on the feet before he does so.

Shine Fights -  We'd love to make that fight. Obviously we've received a lot of interest from fighters all around the world, but we want to give him a fight against a fighter that we have under contract. Obviously we now have Din under contract.
