UFC in the Gahden Aug 28, 2010

Local mixed martial arts fans can get out their 2010 calendars and circle Aug. 28. That’s the date the UFC is scheduled to hold a pay-per-view event at TD Garden.

UFC president Dana White told the Herald yesterday that his organization has reserved the date, but an official announcement won’t be made until the day draws closer.

White has big plans for the UFC’s first Boston show.

“Believe me when I tell you, I’m gonna bring it back this summer,” White told the Herald. “I’m going to put on a show that’s going to blow the (expletive) roof off that place.”

White was anxiously awaiting the passing of legislation to regulate MMA in Massachusetts. That news came last month, when Gov. Deval Patrick signed the bill into law, paving the way for the UFC to come to the Bay State.

White has deep ties to the area, having lived in South Boston in his 20s before moving to Las Vegas to launch the UFC into the world’s premier MMA organization.

“You know how much this means to me and how long I’ve wanted to come there and how much I love the city of Boston,” White said. “People like (the Herald) and a lot of the radio stations and personal friends and some bar owners in Boston have been really good to me since Day 1.”

With the event eight months away, it’s too early to project specific matchups. The only guarantee is that the numerous local UFC fighters will hound White for the opportunity to fight at the Garden.

Brock Lesnar was one name rumored to be targeted for the card. But the heavyweight champion is still dealing with diverticulitis, a serious intestinal disease that has kept him out of action for months.

“That’s total (expletive),” White said of rumors that Lesnar is being considered to headline the Boston card. “I’m not targeting him for any fight right now. I don’t even know what the hell is going to happen to him. Right now, fighting is the least of his worries. This guy wants to live a normal, quality life. He’s not even thinking about fighting right now.”

With the plans in place to hold a show at the Garden, White’s desire to have an event at Fenway Park [map] has been temporarily shelved. But White said he still wants to have a show at the ballpark, with the summer of 2011 the most likely date.

Locals enter fight for Garden spots The many local UFC fighters are checking their calendars and figuring what they will need to do to be ready to fight Aug. 28. As was first reported by the Herald two weeks ago, that’s the date the UFC will hold its first Massachusetts show, with a pay-per-view card at the Garden. UFC president Dana White told the Herald he has big plans for the event. Local fighters are anxious to find out if they’ll be included in those plans. “All the Boston fighters, we never thought we’d fight for the UFC in Boston,” Dorchester native John Howard said. “This is big for us. I know Dana White is happy. It’s his hometown. I know he’s going to do it right. He’s going to blow it out of the water.   “He’s going to put the right fighters in there and it’s going to be a great show. I just hope to be a part of history. To be a part of that would be such an honor.” There are a slew of fighters from the area, most of whom have fought in the past month or are due to fight in the near future. Ideally fighters get in the Octagon every 3-4 months, which puts most on pace for one more bout during the spring to be lined up schedule-wise to appear on the Boston card. “It definitely helps having a date,” said East Bridgewater native Joe Lauzon, who is fighting Saturday at UFC 108 in Las Vegas. “The plan for me is definitely to get this fight out of the way, come out with a win and come out healthy and then fight again in March or April and have a little more time to get ready for August. I can’t wait to get on that card.” Lauzon already has started lobbying UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, but he understands not every local fighter will be included. It’s not as if the UFC needs to stack the card with Boston fighters to sell out the Garden, so White’s focus will be putting together a lineup that will attract the most pay-per-view buys. It’s too early to project who will be on the card, as fighters could get injured or hit a losing streak and lose some of their luster between now and August. But it is considered a foregone conclusion that Kenny Florian will be in one of the featured fights. The Dover native is the most accomplished local fighter and he played an active role in getting mixed martial arts regulated in Massachusetts, addressing the public safety committee at a State House hearing in April. “It would be a dream come true to be able to fight here in Boston,” Florian said. “It’s been a long time coming and finally that it’s here, it’s wild. It’s still not real. . . . To have Boston on board now is a huge step forward for this sport.”

Too bad most of the people on that card will drop out due to injuries.
