MMA matches are not the be all, end all evaluation of one's pure BJJ skills. But I suppose Thiago's BB should be voided for getting mounted by a fake BBer in Rashad.

Sultan, that article is honestly worthless as the author, as well as all of us, have no idea exactly what Rashad has been doing in terms of his training. Rolles thinks he is a bb, and that should really be the end all of it. And the bb need to compete is laughable, as I have gotten to train with Brazilians who will tell you that MOST black belts do not do tourneys ever as they have no desire to (but could do well if they wanted to). With all that said, I ask now why doesn't someone just ASK Rolles instead or at least call up Renzo's academy and truly get the 411. Like I said, I have seen vids of him training in the gi and he knew what he was doing, but why not ask the sources of the rank instead?

Being a great grappler and being A black belt in BJJ aren't necessarily the same thing. I agree that BJJ black belts should be great grapplers but not all great grapplers are BJJ black belts.Randy Couture, Matt Linland, Dan Henderson are all great grapplers. Even better than Rashad but that doesn't make them BJJ black belts. To be a BJJ black belt means that you are trained in the methodology of BJJ in the gi and have progressed from white to black belts. Obviously some people will progress faster than others but they still have been trained in the specific methodology of BJJ.Should Rashad also be given a black belt in Judo based on the same reasons you guys say he deserves a BJJ black belt? Maybe Machida will promote him to a black belt in Karate based on his striking ability?

Let's say he didn't deserve it by some gold standard. (Not having competed in BJJ or whatever.)I still think it is a long way from being a watered down McDojo belt. The guy is a former world champ in a grappling art and practices BJJ professionally as part of his MMA training. The Elvis comparison is way off imho.

I couldn't disagree with the author more. Gracie Jiu jitsu was intended for self defense not sport jiu jitsu. I think a guy who proves his bjj in mma(like nog) is more impressive than guy who proves it in the sport world.  Just my 2 cents.

Excerpt: This brings up the topic of training in a gi. A gi is the required uniform in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). The only way to get a BJJ black belt it to train in the gi. I know there are videos circulating on the internet with Rashad training in a gi. Does this make him a black belt? I do not think it does. BJJ black belts also need to compete. It is part of the process of learning and demonstrating the knowledge you are supposed to have obtained. This does not mean competing in MMA but rather in gi and no gi tournaments. I know Rashad rolls with many high level BJJ guys but this alone does not make him a black belt. If Rolles was a Lute Livre instructor than I could understand the promotion he just received. Is there another reason for belt promotions we are seeing today? Read more here: http://www.fighters.com/01/03/the-rise-of-the-mc-blackbelt-rashad-evans-receives-meaningless-belt
