Gonzaga: I am a better striker than Dos Santos

source: fightersonlymagazine

One-time UFC heavyweight title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga is looking to get back into title contention and a second shot at the belt currently held by Brock Lesnar. At UFC 109 he faces fellow Brazilian hardcase Junior Dos Santos and the winner of the fight is going to see their stock rise strongly in the heavyweight division. We caught up with Napao to see what he’s up to:

In your last fight, you gave Chris Tuscherer a real beating after he took a hard shot in the groin and was actually puking. Do you feel bad for beating him up so hard after that kick in the balls, or is just business? Did you speak to Chris afterwards?

I felt bad for that kick in the groin, nobody wants to do that. It was an accident and I apologized for that. But after that, I had to keep the concentration and come back like nothing happened and try to give my best! I did not have a chance to talk with him after that but I hope the best for him in his next fights.

A lot of people think you are the guy who destroyed Mirko CroCop’s fighting spirit. Do you agree? Since that fight he has never looked the same as the man who competed in PRIDE FC.

It is very hard to say but the reality is - and I don’t know why - sometimes a fighter is afraid to lose and it affects his performance. MMA is much more of a complete sport then it was a few years ago.

That fight was a some time ago, but do you remember how you felt when it was announced you were to fight CroCop, or when you walked to the cage at UFC 70?
Of course I remember everything! To fight a guy like Mirko at that time was always scary, but when I step in the Octagon I am not afraid to fight anybody, I am going to fight to win, even if the guy is Superman!

Probably Maz...That was the single most painful nutshot that I've ever seen in MMA. In terms of raw force, very few fighters (if any) can match up with GG's kicks.

"for sure the same opponents are available outside of Nog, but what i meant is that Dos Santos is on his way to becoming a headliner/main eventer and Gonzaga is many fights away from there. so Dos Santos is on his way to super-fights and Gonzaga's not." Gonzaga has already headlinerd. If he KTFO of Dos Santos, he will certainly be a main event fighter again. Carwin is headlining based solely on his last fight which was a win over Gonzaga.

This is one fight where I don't mind who wins. I like them both.

Tuchscherer fight should have been a NC.. but since they wanted to showcase GG they made him continue. He was fucking puking in the cage for fucks sake.

This would be true if the UFC adhered to some kind of a ranking system, but since they do not, Gonzaga could get main event status by dismantling the golden boy.
