Thanks to Damon Martin from MMAWeekly for pointing out that Matt Pena had some complaints about my Serra/Hughes posts.

Good call by Pena. I didn’t read Matt Hughes’ sarcasm very well and then conveyed it poorly to Matt Serra when I asked the question in the follow up video. It put Serra in a bad position. As a result, the Serra post was a stretch and created heat in the Renzo Gracie-Hughes-Serra triangle where there was none.

As far as having an axe to grind with Matt Hughes. It's not the case. I have nothing against Matt. He’s one of the best guys in the business to work with. He’s always allowed me to ask tough questions and in turn stood his ground. I actually wrote after UFC 98, that the guy has been great for the sport and will be missed when he walks away (http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/cagewriter/post/Retire-or-fight-on-Hughes-will-do-exactly-what-?urn=mma,165516).

So no harm intended.

Hope you accept the apology. Please relay the message to Matt Hughes.

Thanks
Cofield

Cofield, you got one of the best jobs in the world... And yet you're such a tool... Why don't you take notes from Ariel Helwani, who's a true professional!

The apology is appreciated, but not necessary. I wasn't looking to defend any one person's honor, but the honor of the MMA athlete in general and a sport that I truly care about. I would like to be optimistic and hope that I will have startd a trend of holding the people with media credentials accountable for some of the foul stuff they write. However, I'm no fool. Only the fans and promoters issuing media credentials can really keep this stuff from happening. In the meantime the MMA athlete, promotions and fans who just dont know better will continue to suffer from such poor reporting. What is sad is that I know the many hours that MMA participants put in to become fighters, I know the sacrifices it takes to build a successful career. I know the risks it takes for promoters to build solid promotions. Yet it all can be taken away in just a handful of irresponsible posts. Even in this example, the dishonest report was blasted on blogs and front pages all across the internet. Yet the apology is buried on page four of a forum that noone will see unless they come to the underground.I know the temptations of wanting to build a following as a writer, but fabricating stories, sensationalizing stories, and writing for the shock effect period, is not the answer. The only thing that we can do as fans is stop clicking on these sites that use such tactics. As promotions, stop issuing them media credentials. As managers, trainers, and MMA athletes... just start refusing the interview with those reporters known for such tactics. I say again, in no other sport is this issue as previlant than it is in MMA.I do want to thank UG, Bloodyelbow, and the folks at MMA Weekly for doing their part in bringing this issue to the forefront.
