Alvarez vs. Neer for Bellator

by Damon Martin | source: mmaweekly.com

On Tuesday, Bellator Fighting Championships announced the first super fight of their upcoming season as lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez, will take on former UFC competitor, Josh Neer, in a catchweight, non-title fight in May.

According to Bellator, the fight will be the first of a series of super fights the promotion will set up this year pitting their champions against top competition, while they await the chance to defend their titles in 2010.

The promotion says the bout between Alvarez and Neer will take place in May on one of their nationally televised events, but a date and location are yet to be determined.

Eddie Alvarez won the Bellator lightweight title last year by submitting Toby Imada in the tournament finals, and the Philadelphia based fighter also fights under the Dream banner in Japan.

After leaving the UFC last year, Josh Neer has gone on to fight in regional promotions, most recently submitting Anselmo Martinez in Shark Fights to win their interim welterweight title.

Alvarez is massively overrated and only by a few kiddies on the fan sites. I am not sure he is a better wrestler than Neer anyway.I say either Alvarez gets the KO early or Neeer wins in round three or by decision. I don't think a long fight favors Alvarez.

thats because Hansen and Kawajiri arent good strikers but if you actually watched the Dida fight, you would see what happens when a real striker comes for that chin Eddie always leaves hangin.
caposa - Alvarez should be fighting higher ranked opponents, but Neer is a very dangerous guy this is a great pick up by Bellator im also glad to see that their champions will get a few fights in during the season now i just have to hope MSG+ (new yorks FSN channel) will air the events live
This may be a good sign that Bellator will get live play on MSGplus or MSGplus2 mmajunkie.com/news/18035/with-msg-deal-bellator-headed-to-chicago-and-boston-for-upcoming-shows.mma

"Clearly the UFC never gives tune up fights or gimmes to its top fighters." I'm pretty sure his point was that no one is talking about this as a tune-up fight or a gimme, but rather jizzing over what a "seriously great matchup" it is.

People said the same thing when Alvarez fought Dida, Hansen, and Kawajiri. He was supposed to be ko'ed by all of them but it didn't happen.

Eddie Alvarez is the #1 fighter outside of DREAM and UFC by most rankings. This would be like the UFC putting BJ Penn vs. Josh Neer in a non-title fight at 160 pounds.... Your examples don't correlate to what you are trying to prove. This is shady matchmaking. Not surprised considering Bellator is the same organization that allowed Eddie Alvarez to miss weight during a title tournament....
