Hughes: 'Strength will overcome technique'

by Kevin Iole | source: sports.yahoo.com

“I like the fact that he’s a little older than me,” the 36-year-old Hughes said of his 43-year-old opponent. “I’m feeling my age and I’m sure hoping he’s feeling his age. I like that.”

“I’ve had a lot of changes in my life the last five years. “I became a Christian. I got married five years ago. Three-and-a-half years ago, I watched my daughter be born. Three months ago, I watched another daughter be born. When you see that in real life, and you’re around kids all day – I’m around my kids, because I love my kids and I love nothing more than being around them – I’m not the same fighter. I can’t possibly be."

“It used to be, when I walked into the ring, that person across the ring was lucky I didn’t rip his arm off and start beating him with it. That’s the way I felt. I’m just not that aggressive any more where I want to tear somebody’s head off. I’m 36 years old now. I would say I’ve turned into a more technical fighter than a nasty fighter.”

“There’s a lot less pressure when you go to someone else’s home town and everyone is expecting him to win and I’m just the opponent walking in. “I am really looking forward to being kind of the underdog in the environment of the fight.”

“In a way, I expect I might be a better fighter because I’m relaxed and I’m happy with my life and where I am and there’s not a lot that’s worrying me.”

I'm amazed by some of the stuff in this thread. Of course he thinks he's going to win. As a fighter you have to have confidence. The other thing is fighters eventually get over the hill. He's probally got a lot of wear and tear over the time spent with militech so cut the guy some freakin slack about not being champ anymore.

"Guys forget how dominate matt was and to discredit him they always sum it up to he fought lesser opponents. Guys knocking him saying he can't deal with the new breed of fighter is bs. The guy has 40+ pro fights and its obvious he has lost several steps. He is not the same fighter he was 5 years ago. Prime matt hughes was a unstoppable force. There is nothing worse than fight fans saying the competition was weak and thats why a fighter looked so good. How about the fighter was just that good and made his competition look weak..... " Um, nope. Your right, its not that he was fighting lesser opponents & he was just that dominant FOR HIS TIME. He's already turned down challenges from Kos & Fitch, because he knows he cant deal with the new breed himself. If BJ Penn moves up to 170 & fights Hughes again, garaunteed he crushes him. Cuase Penn has made adjustments to his game, such as cardio. Hughes hasnt done shit with his game, sure he can still compete with the other guys, & i'm sure he'll do fine against Renzo... but he's NOT on the level of any of the contenders nowadays.

It was a close fight. He still rightly won it.

He was barely able to hang on for that win. Don't act like he went in there and beat him down...He went in there and tried to hold Serra down and get a win on points.
