It'll soon be legal to hold mixed martial arts competitions in Maine, but old-school boxing is off limits for the moment.
Lewiston boxing promoter Joe Gamache Sr. had to throw in the towel for a planned June 19 fight after getting a warning from the district attorney. The event was supposed to mark the debut of Stephen Gamache, son of retired world champion Joey Gamache Jr.
It turns out that professional boxing became illegal when the Maine Athletic Commission was eliminated by lawmakers in 2007 as a cost-saving measure.
Two years later, lawmakers created the Mixed Martial Arts Authority of Maine. The Sun Journal newspaper says the group is in the process of adopting rules for events in Maine.
