Jones turned down fight with Lil' Nog at UFC 114

Q: I have a gripe about the replacement fighter for Forrest Griffin on that card. Jason Brilz? Honestly? This guy lost to Eliot Marshall. While the match has huge upside for Brilz, it has huge downside for fans who wanted to see Antonio Rogerio Nogueira showcase his talent against top contenders. Could the UFC not get a better replacement? Thiago Silva and Jon Jones would have been much better replacements if they would have been willing to fight.

Kevin Iole:
Jon Jones turned down the fight because he hasn’t been in the gym since his win over Brandon Vera. Thiago Silva, Ryan Bader and Vera are injured and not ready. Brilz is coming off a win over Eric Schafer, is 18-2-1 and is 13-1-1 in his last 15. Plus, Nogueira was contractually owed a fight and no one else was available. And do you think the UFC wouldn’t want to make the best possible fight? It’s trying to sell, so do you think it wants to put a fight on people wouldn’t be interested in? I don’t.

Jones is not stupid, he will not fight a guy the caliber of lil nog in short notice. He hasnt trained at all since he beat Vera....

Eh. Fair enough to disagree. Lil Nog, like his brother, has never been a particularly hard puncher, but his boxing fundamentals are far superior to Jones'. What does he accomplish with a takedown? Ground and pound his way to being submitted? Staying at kick range or in the clinch are good options for him but his lack of experience, conditioning and fundamentals are huge liabilities.  Just my two cents.

Thing about Jones is that he is very confident and asked for a top 10 LHW right after the Vera fight. I dont see him turning down this fight. I gotta go with Jones' word and say Iole got some wrong info.

Jones had an agreement to fight the Janitor in the works alread(if it was not already officially signed). A fight against Lil Nog would have moved his career ahead more, but I respect the decision (if it was ever offered)to honour his fight agreement.

Probably for the same unknown reason the UFC put him on ice for 6 months after the Vera fight and gave him a slight step down in competition from Vera...NEITHER make any sense.Jones took no damage and finished Vera in the 1st, he should have already had another fight by now, yet we still have 3 months to wait for him and Vladdy.
