Strikeforce plans 1-night women's tournament

by Damon Martin | source: mmaweekly.com

The search to find a top contender in the Strikeforce women's welterweight (135-pound) division will start and finish with a one night, four-woman tournament on Aug 13 in Phoenix.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker appeared on MMAWeekly.com Radio and said that the company is planning two tournaments: one in the 135-pound weight class and another in the 145-pound weight class, but the lower weight division will go first.

"It will be in August," Coker confirmed for the 135-pound tournament.

The other big piece of news, beyond the victor earning a shot at the winner of the upcoming bout between current champion Sarah Kaufman and challenger Roxanne Modafferi, is the announcement that it will be a one-night tournament. The top four contenders in the division will be paired up and battle it out until only one is left standing.

That's messed up. How can Tara be left out of this tourney?(perhaps an existing contract issue?)

It's Damm, Coenen, Hitomi Akano and Maiju Kujala. Jennifer Tate is pregnant and out until next year. June 22nd was when I first posted about the tournament lineup here, but it seems to have been ignored (I think I need to bribe UG News - you didn't see me write that, Dana) since I don't work for one of the bigger sites. Sadly kind of used to that at this point. Anyways, that was the lineup as of June 2nd, per Scott Coker himself. It may have changed since then because there were a few details left to be worked out, but Damm and Coenen's participation being passed off as a "rumour that has surfaced" is incorrect.

http://www.mmarising.com/news/2010/07/02/strikeforce-womens-tournament-update/ As of June 2nd, those were the four confirmed participants. Unless things have changed in the past six days - a possibility that I'm looking into - that's the lineup for the tournament. This isn't a "rumour" as listed in the MMAWeekly article that UG News has posted and the comments in my July 2nd article were all from Scott Coker himself and three other sources very close to the negotiations. The information that I've obtained for both this Strikeforce tournament and for the Bellator one (see here) has been substantial and all of the confirmations have come straight from the promotions' respective CEOs. It would be greatly appreciated if UG News posted a few of these things because I'm doing the best that I can to get complete information out as quickly as possible.

"I don't think we've invited her to the tournament, no," said CokerHe doesn't think they invited Tara Larosa? Shouldn't he know these things? Or maybe Showtime didn't tell him who was invited.

Good, they aren't mixing it in on a card when men are fighting.
