Toughill struggles with weight cut, fight In limbo

by Robert Sargent | source: mmarising.com

A planned August 21st bout between Erin “Steel” Toughill and Shana “Rock Solid” Olsen at Strikeforce: Houston could be postponed or possibly even cancelled as Toughill struggles to cut down to 145 pounds. Sources have confirmed with MMARising.com that a catchweight has been proposed.

Toughill has been scheduled to make her long-awaited Strikeforce debut on multiple occasions spanning nearly a year, but injuries and communication breakdowns have kept her off of cards. The outspoken former boxer also threatened to leave the promotion in March, but later reconsidered.

The planned fight between Toughill (10-2-1) and Olsen (4-0-0) was targeted for the main card of the Houston event, but Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker informed MMARising.com that the fight could be pushed back to September or October. He declined to get into specifics on the record, but additional sources have since indicated that the delay involves Toughill’s inability to cut to the 145-pound level in time for the fight. While a catchweight has been proposed, the same sources state that the fight is unlikely to proceed at a weight higher than 145 pounds.

Negotiations are ongoing and a resolution may be reached.

After giving it some thought, here's what I think is going on with Erin:1) Erin enjoys the popularity/income that is associated with being an attractive and successful MMA fighter2) Since Erin has been involved in the sport, Womens MMA has evolved to what appears to now consist primarily of three weight classes at 125, 135, and 145 lbs3) Erin cannot/does not want to have to cut weight to fight at 145 lbs4) There is no competition for her above 145 lbs currently as no organization arranges fights above that limit5) Erin feels that the only option left open to her is to sign a contract to fight at 145, and then verbally goad another female to fight her at a higher weight class that she is more comfortable withSo basically, Erin is in MMA limbo due to her size and she's doing everything within her power to manipulate the situation so that it will favor her. Obviously, things are not working out so well if that is indeed the case.Have I missed anything?

Erin seems like she is one of those people that are stuck in a decade earlier and never progresses.Like, look what I did years ago and have never brought themselves to realize this is 2010. Like those guys who still wear 1980's style clothes and time has passed them by.Fight at a higher weightclass Erin or just fight ANYWHERE or retire please, too many excuses and what if's.Wish we could have seen your full potential.
