Jackson: Jones' wrestling equal to or better than Matyushenko's

source: sherdog.com

Jackson, who’s built an army of standout fighters out in the New Mexico desert with fellow trainer Mike Winkeljohn, said the 23-year-old Jones has been drilled to handle the close-quarters wrestler, as well as the negation of Jones’ 10-inch longer reach.

“We've been working a lot of good inside stuff and wrestling and all that stuff so we should be well prepared for his game plan, I hope,” said Jackson. “I fully expect (Matyushenko) to come in and swing at Jon's head trying to take Jon down and then holding Jon on the ground.”

Matyushenko wrestled for his native Belarus before moving to the U.S. and becoming a two-time national junior college champion for Lassen College. The 39-year-old former IFL champion’s wrestling has been a major component of his game throughout his 13-year career.

Jackson believes Jones’ non-traditional wrestling style, which is emphasized by explosive split-second trips and drops, will hold its own.

“I think he's easily as good if not better than Vladimir only because of his unique wrestling style. He has a style if you haven't dealt with it, it's very, very difficult to deal with,” said Jackson. “Matyushenko is a much more decorated wrestler and has more experience but I think what negates that is Jon Jones has unorthodox wrestling... I feel very comfortable in the wrestling department.”

Vlad's better than people give him credit for and he's def. the best wrestler Jones has fought so far (he actually trains w/ a legit team, so his MMA skills are way better than Hamill's).

Jackson gives more credit to Vlad's wrestling threat than most all of the underground.

Jones is the most exciting fighter to watch at the moment. His trips/throws have been simply amazing, especially against game wrestlers like Hamill, who was pretty much thrown around the octagon. Neverming his standup! Spinning back elbow from holding a single leg? That is sick.

ive always been one to say that Urijah makes mistakes, despite his successbut he is a much more technically skilled fighter then Jon Jones, and has been fighting top guys longer then Jon has been fighting. anyone disputing that knows precisely shit.plus, Jones is whoopin ass on mid level 205ers. Urijah is usually fighting a wieght class up, and only against top 10 opponents. and it is a firmly established fact that the lighter weights have more technically skilled and athletic competitors.

No, he definetly isn't at his peak in feeestyle wrestling. He has been working on BJJ for the last decade and a half so I think he's at his peak as a grappler.I first gave this fight to Jones. I'm know thinking that Vladd will pull the upset. He has had unlimited upside potential and I think his training recently is better than ever. Vladd by ground and pound.

Waaaay to early to say this, not even close to being true at the moment. You talk about Faber being hype, but he proved a lot more during his "hype" days than Jones has so far.My main problem with Faber ever being considered P4P top ten - which I disagreed with - was that it was a weak weight class and he didn't fight great competition. Well, he still fought a lot better competition than Jones has so far!I think Matyushenko will put up a tougher fight than many expect, and I expect him to slow the Jones hype train down slightly - but, I still think Jones wins and will finish Vladdy eventually. Jones' cardio is the one thing I'd be concerned about with him; if he gasses he could lose a decision.
