Bernard Hopkins gives his opinion on Couture vs. Toney

by Steve Cofield | source: yahoo.com

Much of the boxing world is still pretty down on the skills of mixed martial artists. Not Bernard Hopkins. The light heavyweight great was one of the first guys to admit he'd get whupped in the Octagon fighting under MMA rules. The 45-year-old legend is fearful that James Toney has bitten off more than he can chew in his fight against Randy Couture.

"I think James Toney is going to get his ass kicked. James Toney is out of his league," Hopkins recently told Mauro Ranallo on Sirius' Hardcore Sports Radio (Audio). "I believe and I'll go on record with this, the best MMA guy or UFC guy goes up against the boxer in the world, in their arena ... gets their ass kicked. I don't care if it's Floyd (Mayweather), (Manny) Pacquiao or Bernard Hopkins. It's not what we do."

i think it depends on who. mma fighters punch differently than boxers do, much harder and in a 3 round battle I would give it to an mma fighter. but in a 5(+) round war. the boxer would take it in the later rounds. boxers look to pace themselves and capitilize, rarely do you see boxers going for gusto on every punch, like mma fighters. i was talking with some pro and ammy boxers about this. One example is the difference in the way we use the uppercut. Boxers use the uppercut to get the head up to punch it. mma fighters use it to decapitate and rarely follow up.

A) Hopkins is friends/acquaintances with CoutureB) BHop purposely says outlandish things (as many boxing greats have and Chael has now brought to MMA full on ). Hopkins is actually a really nice guy nowadays when hes not promoting a fight.

I for the most part agree w/this.We would be giving Couture much less of a chance in a boxing match than we are giving Toney in this MMA match.

a boxer has a better chance of beating a MMA fighter in MMA then the MMA fighter has at beating a boxer in boxing
