Couture critques Anderson Silva

by Mike Chiapetta | source: mmafighting.com

"I think Anderson needs to look at the spirit in which he's competing," he said. "It appears to me that he's been doing his best not to lose. Instead of doing what he did early on and competing to win, and taking guys out, he's doing enough now to get by, be successful and keep winning."

Ironically, at the time, the 47-year-old Couture had been responding to a question about whether he felt the 35-year-old Silva was getting old. He disagreed that was the case, instead saying that Silva was suddenly more passive, and noting that in MMA, taking a cautious approach is playing with fire.

"Eventually that kind of fighting attitude will catch up with you," said Couture, who faces Toney on Aug. 28 in Boston. "You have to kind of go out, risk it and lay it all on the line. That's the way it is. I think Anderson has strayed away from that a little bit, but I don't think he's getting old at all. I think he's still a tremendous athlete with amazing ability. You know, there were some pretty interesting things he still demonstrated in the fight against Sonnen even though most of the fight, he spent on his back and got dominated."

Early on in Anderson's UFC career he would spend the first minute or so of the fight feeling out his opponent and then aggressively try to finish the fight. Anderson's first seven fights in the UFC never made it out of the second round. However, in Anderson's last five fights the one minute feeling out period that was customary in his previous fights has turned into full fight feeling out periods. If you listen to Rogan and Goldberg they always talk about how Anderson likes to feel his opponent out at the beginning but recently what we hear is Goldberg just constantly repeating that Anderson is about to engage or getting ready to engage. In his last five fights the only guy he has been able to beat decisively is Forrest and that is just because Forrest chased after him and is an easy target.Trying to compare Anderson's recent performances to guys like GSP, Randy, Jon Fitch etc is just ridiculous. Those guys go out and impose their will. Anderson doesn't impose his will, he just dances around and doesn't engage.

In three of Anderson's last five fights he has danced around the ring refusing to engage his opponent.Guys like GSP and Randy may fight "safe" but are always pushing the pace and going after their opponents trying to impose themselves.

I was in a real room that randy walked into and nobody did that, I guess sometimes reality is different though

Randys point may not be too hypocritical because he doesnt have as many options or near the finishing abilty that Silva has.Randy can grind and occasionally get a stoppage. Its not like he is holding back some high-level finishing skills when he is in there.Silva, due to his dominance and past performances, makes it clear when he is coasting and just going through the motions.

How exactly was Silva 'coasting to a win' over Sonnen? Handy needs to go work his wall & hump for Toney.....

Sorry, LilBrockonmychest. Sometimes you have to blow a loud trumpet to get through to people.

Though Augsgepict has to try and be a pompous jackoff for some reason, I understand what he is saying. I also understand that Randy is comparing the Silva that used to dominate people to the one that he feels is "coasting to a win." However, the fact that Randy would even comment on ANYONE trying "not to lose" as opposed to trying to finish your opponent is laughable and hypocritical on his part
