Couture: I don't think boxers get MMA

by Damon Martin | source:

Mixed martial arts vs. boxing.

It's a longstanding debate among combat sports fans and journalists, and while there have been MMA fighters that have done pro boxing, and pro boxers that have done MMA, the biggest crossover fight the two sports has ever seen is about to take place on Aug. 28 in Boston.

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture had no problem being the first person to step up to the plate when he heard that boxing champion James Toney signed with the UFC. In fact, he volunteered and wanted to be the one to welcome him to the Octagon.

"We've heard (Floyd Mayweather Jr.) and others run their mouths about it, and he's the first one that's actually had the courage to step up and fight, and stand behind what he's talking," Couture told MMAWeekly Radio.

"He's a tremendous boxer. I've watched him compete. He's a four-time world champion. He's an amazing striker. The question is how much of the other stuff is he going to be able to pick up and learn by the time he has to step into that cage.

"To finally get a world champion boxer to sign on the dotted line and step up is a huge fight. It's going to bring a lot of eyes from the boxing world to see how this fight comes out and unfolds. That's a fun fight, that's a cool place to be in."

Projection. We have boxing fans (not boxers) constantly reminding us that the hand skills of MMA fighters aren't as good as boxers. And the people who understand the sport have to remind them there is more to it.

Striking makes up 33% of the MMA skill setClinching/Grappling makes up 33%Submissions make up 33%Punching (boxing) makes up 25% of the striking.Boxing is the best!!!

Kai you're the butthurt one, and it's painfully obvious. Theres probably 5 boxing threads a day here and you always come in talking shit.Funny that the majority of people respect boxers, most other guys in sports respect boxers, and most actual MMA fighters respect boxers. It's just a niche group of tapout wearing fanbois and has-been "grapplers" on the internet that trash them.

I'm not going to even get into CreamKai's assertion that MMA guys always win.Yeah wrestlers have a great chance of taking down a boxer but who cares? As stated before that's not a street matter how much CreamKai wants it to be.

^^Yeah you sure destroyed me when you claimed Roy Jones never challenged Anderson to MMA and Dana tucked on it.LOL. I've forgotten more about striking than you'll ever know. stick to your fake fight stories. Remember when you claimed they were Kronk fighters? then got called out? then back off the Kronk part. But are back to claiming it now. LOL.LOL@Kai trying to turn this around. No boxing fans are butthurt. I don't even care about this a tenth of what you do. I just have fun watching you wig out and tell your stupid stories.

I do agree with you.. I bounced in bars, and that is what usually happened..both would start out punching, one would get clipped and then dive in and start "wrestling to get the other down". Grappler vs striker one on one the grappler wins most of the time if he sticks to what he knows, but the problem is most try and "bang" to look good and against a good boxer they'd be KO'd pretty quick..and in the street you never know who has boxed and who hasn't...

Wow, what butthurtness.Seriously, those who've trained against boxer as MMA-ers and boxers who've trained with MMA fighters all know that the MMA guys win.You have no argument against that, or any argument against the subset vs full set argument either, instead acting butt hurt over the details of one of the analogies.Boxing fans really are the most butthurt fans outside of Cleveland Basketball fans.Jesus, I don't even know why Bsrizpac posts, everyone here who even talks at him destroys him.
