Hometown hero Lauzon shines in featured bout

In the featured prelim bout of the UFC's highly anticipated Boston debut, Massachusetts native Joe Lauzon was shot out of a cannon and decimated an overwhelmed Gabe Ruediger en route to a first-round submission victory.

The lightweight fight, which headlined the night's Spike TV "UFC Prelims" broadcast, re-energized a TD Garden crowd and followed a string of fairly lackluster fights.

Lauzon dominated Ruediger from the opening bell. After rocking him standing, Lauzon took the fight to the mat and continued the abuse. With his opponent kneeling, Lauzon unloaded vicious punches from behind and ultimately settled for a fight-ending armbar just two minutes into the fight.

"I was going to take his heart, and then I was going to take his arm," Lauzon said. "And that's what I did.

"I'm so glad I got to fight here in Boston. It's a dream come true."

gabe did a bunch of stuff right and would have escaped the position if he was dealing with a lesser grappler. joe just had his shit wired ultra-tight.

I called him a big fish BTW, and by no way was I trying to diminish Joe's anhialation of Gabe. Just stating that maybe Gabe needs a little more time in the minors before coming up to the UFC again. I think he should have to beat some other guys that have been cut by the UFC to earn his next shot.

great fight by joe but everyone dismissing gabe is a little short sighted. there was a lot of pressure on him after the show, coming back, first time jitters probably (after a hiatus from the ufc) and fighting in joes hometown............. not to mention joe's a beast. calling him a small fish does him and joes performance a disservice.

I knew Lauzon would win but was really looking forward to Gabe's return to UFC after all that TUF season 5 drama :( I don't think Gabe will be with UFC for too much longer...

I thought it might have been a bad idea for Gabe to make that thread. Great fight by Joe.
