Edgar beats Penn again

Frankie Edgar made B.J. Penn look average.

Solidifying himself as the kryptonite to Penn’s lightweight Superman, Edgar retained his 155-pound championship with a near flawless performance in the UFC 118 “Edgar vs. Penn 2” headliner on Saturday at the TD Garden in Boston. Edgar swept the scorecards from all three judges in a unanimous verdict: 50-45, 50-45 and 50-45.

“I feel like I can walk on water,” Edgar said

Edgar scored with two- and three-punch combinations throughout the fight, delivered strong takedowns in the first and second rounds and dominated the revered Hawaiian in virtually every phase of the sport. Penn was visibly frustrated after the first five minutes, and his situation did not improve.

“Frankie fought a great fight. He’s the man,” Penn said. “I’ve got nothing bad to say. He fought me twice. He walked away with the decision twice. What can you say? It looked like the same kind of fight as last time. He got off good. Much respect. I’ve really got to go back and think about things.”

For once Rogan was right. It was Edgar's footwork and angles that won that fight. Also he pointed out that Edgar had coaches in his corner and BJ (true to his name) just had a couple of guys that suck him off and didn't have a clue of how to help him make crucial adjustments when he was getting dominated.

the whole card was like that where i was watching. the place was empty as well. it was an excellent chance for mma to win over a ton of boxing fans if the fights all looked like diaz. but the place was empty by the 4th of penn edgar. meh was the consensus view. MMA has gone the way of boxing guys have found a way to win under sanctioned rules. I can also see that in a fight like penn edgar the fault shouldnt lie with edgar he did all he could. I think he tried his best to win the fight and used all the tools he had. the same cannot be said for bj. it is evolution of the sport and fighters will have to come up with ways to stop boring fighters. none can expect the rules to get changed back to pride rules, which is the obvious answer as soccer kicks and knees to downed opponents are not palatable to us audiences. time for finishers to step up their game.

It's the way he lost the fight that makes us think this. He knew exactly what to expect from Edgar, got exactly that and did nothing to counter it. He fought the fight like a Boxing match and then 3 rounds in when he was already tired decided hey why not try and take this guy down and he was able to do it with relative ease. He was even landing good kicks when he actually threw them. His skills are up to par with anyone. Nobody at LW and possibly any weight class has his combination of Boxing, Wrestling and BJJ. He is simply not good at using all his skills in an MMA fight. Someone to put everything together like what a Greg Jackson does for GSP is perhaps what BJ needs at this point in his career.

Nobody was saying that BJ needed to change his camp when he was beating: Florian, Diego, and Stevenson. All of a sudden BJ needs to find a new camp because Frankie Edgar is better than he is? Seems like an excuse to me.That's almost as lame as those fighters that think going down in weight will make them better...
