Ultimate Fighter" season 8 winner Efrain Escudero has been released from the UFC following his September 15 loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC Fight Night in Austin, Tex.

Escudero confirmed the release with MMAWeekly.com on Monday.

Since winning the 8th season of the reality show by defeating Phillipe Nover, Escudero has gone 2-2 in the UFC. During that time the Arizona based fighter holds wins over Cole Miller and Dany Lauzon, while picking up losses against Evan Dunham and as previously mentioned Charles Oliveira.

This marks the first time the UFC has released a winner from the "Ultimate Fighter" reality show. Travis Lutter was also released from the UFC after winning on the show, but he had previously competed in the promotion, and was a part of their "comeback" 4th season.

Does this go some way to proving that the whole TUF process should be brought to an end? I read an interesting piece recently which highlighted the amount of fighters that are involved in each TUF, including before it even makes it to TV, and the talent pool gets thinner every time. Of course, new and younger fighters will be available for every season, but is the UFC going to be a step too far for them?

i'm sure efrain will be back. i used to train with him at southwest mma and the kid is very tough. might just need to make some adjustments and refocus. best of luck to him.

Well I agree, he shouldn't be fired for that alone, but I think it was just a conglomeration of reasons. Dana wouldn't let a promising prospect go unless he had a good reason, he cares more about money than anything else.

Efrain is a bit simple, I dont mean that in a bad or deogatory way, but surely he should not be punished for this. I am sure we have all seen such folk who smile at inappopriate moments or let out laughs or yells when they shouldnt, they dont mean any harm by it, on the contary they have very good natures just sometimes let their job and good nature come out at the wrong time, its not malicious in any way, I would have hoped the uFc would recognise this and accept it rather than punishing it unquestioned.

Kendall Grove, Mac Danzig, Joe Stevenson...all had back to back losses - but NOT to relative unknownsDunham beat his ass badly...Olivera out-hustled him...that's why he's getting cut...Sends a message to the NEW batch of TUFFERS...

I think this is a mistake by the UFC. Escudero is a young fighter with a ton of upside. He also makes sense from a marketing standpoint. They keep guys like Antoni Hardonk around and nobody cares about him or wants to see him fight.

It's not the smiling, it's the timing of the smiling. Like disrespecting your opponent, promotion, and sport by missing weight... then smiling about it. Or kneeing your opponent in the groin and while he is rolling around on the ground in agony... smiling about it.

You think he should be fired because he smiled too much ??That is crazy talk son,( I am being sarcastic I am trying it out as I am told I am too serious at times ) I know the current fad is for mixed martial artists to be tattoed rednecks who look mean and gruff, but whats wrong with smiling a bit ? The world isnt that bad, we dont have to be angry all the time surely ?But you are right something defintily fishy going on, very strange indeed
