Rich Franklin vs. Forrest Griffin targeted for Super Bowl weekend UFC

by Matt Erickson | source:

A light heavyweight fight between former champions Rich Franklin and Forrest Griffin is in the works for the UFC's card on Super Bowl Saturday, Feb. 5, which tentatively has been labeled UFC 127.

Sources with knowledge of the planned bout told MMA Fighting that the fight has yet to be signed, but is the intended direction of the promotion. Additionally, sources have informed MMA Fighting's Mike Chiappetta the battle between the two former champions is expected for that event.

The bout will likely serve as the pay-per-view's co-main event under an anticipated middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort. Light heavyweight contenders Jon Jones and Ryan Bader are also expected to fight on the card. The event has not yet been announced, but is expected to take place in Las Vegas.

I see this fight going like Rich - Hendo. But Rich getting the nod this time. Rich does have KO power though so you never know.

Agreed!  I think this is going to be a GREAT fight!  The only thing I hate is that I really like both fighters, so I don't want to see either guy lose.  I have to pull for Griffin though...he's my favorite.  :)

Hopefully Forrest comes to throw them thangs and doesn't look to snuggle and hug against the cage the whole time, Franklin is a banger like a Peter Aerts type on the feet and he's there to put on a show not point fight.

How can anyone bitch about this fight. 2 warriors who leave it all in the cage for the sake of entertaining the fans (which some of you forgot, that's what these guys get paid to do). I'm starting to get the feeling that everyone believes every fight on a PPV should either be a title fight or #1 contender fight. I'm pretty sure that's not possible, so how about we just appreciate when an awesome fight is going to happen.

What other fights are set for that weekend? Wasn't Silva vs Belfort planned for the same card?
