Bellator pushes for Lombard-Jacare, Askren-Diaz

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney continues his plea for Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker to return his calls about co-promoting. With a potential bout between Eddie Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez a hot topic in recent weeks, Bellator has begun calling out additional Strikeforce champions as well.

Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard outpointed Alexander Shlemenko in the promotion’s season three finale Thursday in Hollywood, Fla. The Cuban-born judoka then challenged Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza during his postfight interview.

Rebney also said he wants to pit his welterweight champion, Ben Askren, against Strikeforce titleholder Nick Diaz.

I like how all of a sudden Rebney is hellbent on getting SF vs Bellator fights. Coker said he was open to it a long time before the Alvarez-Gil issue, and Bjorn never showed any real interest. Now that he realizes he has no one for Alvarez to fight, he's scrambling. Bellator wants exclusivity in the US with most of their guys (and from what I remember doesnt really want Alvarez fighting anywhere else), but expects Strikeforce to jump at the opportunity to promote their guys. They would never co-promote with a smaller org, which is what they are to Strikeforce.

Strikeforce being harassed from above and below is right. Big Strikeforce cards look like they have 5-10 times more attendance than Bellator. Tough move for Strikeforce to legitimize Bellator like that. I'd love to see the fights but makes sense why Coker would be slow to pull the trigger.

Diaz would kill Askren standing and he would catch him on the ground.

Who precisely has Mayhem beat to be considered "tough" or even a contender at any weight?  I like the guy, think he's cool on the UG and he's certainly done his part to get MMA mainstream exposure, but Diaz earned his way to where he is.  Mayhem has never performed well against a guy in the top 5 except in his rematch with Tim Kennedy.

I'd like to see both fights. Lombard is one of my favorite fighters but I think Jacare would destroy him. I see Diaz beating Askren but Askren has a good chance of winning too.

I hope this happens. God bless promoters who are not scared to co-promote.

Agreed. People want to give Diaz so much credit because they want to believe his gimmick. Now mayhem has proved it is just a gimmick.
