The Ultimate Fighting Championship's long-awaited return to Michigan proved a successful one. Saturday's UFC 123 event, which took place at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit, scored 16,404 attendees and a 2.1 million gate.

The arena was nearly at capacity by the time the night's untelevised preliminary card began. By the time the Spike TV "UFC Prelims" special and pay-per-view main card kicked off, the arena was full.

White said he is pleased with the turnout for the event and that the organization "definitely" will make a return to Detroit. However, no exact timetable has been set.

I'm guessing the empty seats were due to the ticket resellers that buy up all the seats just to turn around and sell them at an inflated price not being able to get rid of them all. How else can you explain many of the areas being sold out days 2 days before they go on sale to the general public? No way the newsletter and fight club sales account for that.

That article is full of shit.  i was there and there were a ton of empty seats.  They were mostly in the most expensive areas of the arena but they were still empty.

And? Does this somehow make boxing more entertaining? Showering their fighters with money only takes away their drive and hunger to compete.

There was 6 screens blocking off sections of the upper bowl. Obviously those seats are not sold

Why do they only get mid-16,000s in 20,000 seat arenas? I don't think it's an issue of selling the tickets. The Palace holds 20,804 for hockey.

One final note on 'why Germany?'. Germany is a gigantic market for boxing. Given boxing's success and the WWE's success, it stands to reason that MMA will eventually do well there. It is just going to take some patience to get through all the red tape and political landmines.
