Renzo Gracie wants to fight at UFC's return to Brazil

by Ariel Helwani | source: mmafighting.com

Renzo Gracie's camp wants you to know that his MMA career isn't close over and that he wants to fight on the UFC card in Brazil on Aug. 27.

MMA Fighting recently spoke to Gracie's manager, Ali Abdel Aziz of Dominance MMA Management, about the 43-year-old's desire to fight on what will be the first UFC card in Gracie's home country since October 1998.

"It's Renzo's dream to fight in a UFC in Brazil," Abdel Aziz said, "but it's up to the UFC and Dana [White] to make it happen."

I completely agree. Ryan's fights in Pride were awesome. Best staredown in the Gracie family by far.

Renzo wasn't just sitting around doing nothing. He was developing his schools in the North East US and teaching BJJ in Abu Dhabi (and other parts of the world). As mentionned, he was walking around at 210 lbs and not restricting his diet. It's not to say he didn't exercise, but he wasn't training for competition.

I don't mean to be picky but you did say "Much respect to the Gracies, but the game has passed them by." So to repeat, yes some are getting old, but the "game" has certainly not passed them by. Renzo and Caesar are very relevant, and the younger generation may yet prove their worth. The sad truth about the younger gracies is that they are all making a great living teaching BJJ that none really have the fire in them to fight.

Let's see here. For my post I was talking about 2 Gracies, Renzo and Royce. The game has passed those two by. Of course the family can still have great fighters come up. I agree, it'd be stupid to think otherwise. And to jj100, just because Renzo is a great trainer doesn't mean that the game hasn't passed him by as a fighter. Like I said earlier, I respect both men's contributions to the sport, but they are in no way near being some of the top fighters in the world.

This is what kills me about some MMA fans. You get a true warrior like Renzo, lays it all on the line (against a guy who was only two years removed from being the "best welterweight ever") and he gets dumped on by a bunch of d-bags who probably live in their parents basements taking time to talk trash on these forums between world of warcraft battles. Renzo is not only one of the nicest people in the world, but is much more an expert on being a warrior and fighting than any of us will ever hope to be. My bottom line is that if Renzo says he's ready to fight in Rio, I'll buy that because he knows more about being a warrior than most of us could ever hope to know. The Hughes fight was tough to watch as a Renzo believer, but I'll bet he's much more prepared this time. Especially after how disappointed he was in his own performance in his last outing.

Oh I know you weren't, I was just saying in case others were. That's my ignorance though on Renzo, I didn't realize he had literally sat around. I figured someone like him would always be in shape, maybe not fighting shape, but you get the idea. Then again he was very good back in the day so he knows himself better than anyone else does.
