Coker wants Melendez vs. Kawajiri next

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker wants lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez to defend his title next against Tatsuya Kawajiri.

“We’re definitely having that conversation,” Coker said Wednesday on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show. “I’m going to try to work that out and get Kawajiri in there with Gilbert. I think that that’s a fight we’re interested in.”

Melendez outpointed Kawajiri in a December 2006 encounter in Pride. The Japanese fighter has lost just twice since, and last week he earned a unanimous decision over former Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson.

“I know that Kawajiri wants to come fight here in America,” Coker said. “We had some conversations [in Japan] before I left, and we’re going to continue right after the Nashville show this Friday.”

Would be a good fight. Kawajiri matches up against Melendez much better than Aoki did and I think Kawajiri's style would translate well in the US. It'll probably happen this year since Coker is will actually co-promote with DREAM.

japanese always underperform in the US.i would rather see this in Japan where the jpanese audience is hospitable to foreigners and the japanese feel comfortable in their element.the US audience is very hostile.

First fight was close, but melendez was a step ahead of him the entire fight. It wasnt by much but it was clear as day who deserved the victory. I think of it like the first ishida vs melendez fight. It was close but ishida was a step ahead the entire fight. Both guys have improved drastically. Both guys striking have tightened up. Kawajiri's passing on top has improved immensely. Both guys are top of the lightweight division and the thought of a rematch gives me a raging hard on just thinking about it.
