Alistair Overeem: I can prove I'm the best fighter in the world

by Steven Marrocco | source: mmajunkie.com

"All the fighters in that tournament are good, so there are no easy fights," he said. "I'm a little surprised about it, and I don't know why this bracket is designed this way, but my job is to fight. I'm not picking opponents, so if that's the way they made the bracket, so be it."

What's to become of the work that Overeem has done in K-1 and DREAM? Will he defend his new belts this year?

"When my schedule allows it, I will always try to find more fights," he said. "I’m a active fighter, so I will never say no to a fight if my management can make the fight.

"I’m focusing on one fight at a time, and my management will talk to the promoter and see when we are ready to fight in Japan."

But for now, Overeem's sights are set stateside.

"I can show the American fans that I’m the No. 1 fighter of Strikeforce," he said. "Entering such a tournament is not only great for the MMA fans but also a great way to prove that I’m the best fighter in the world."

I don't see how anyone could fail to see Overeem as a Top 10 heavyweight, there's no other heavyweight in MMA history that has held 3 titles simultaneously. He's K1, DREAM, and Strikeforce's heavyweight champion. He's fought different guys in each organization and has defeated them all, he's beaten more guys than Brock Lesnar has and has done so more impressively, so why shouldn't he be rated Top 10? If guys in organizations other than the UFC/WEC are rated Top 10, then so should Overeem, afterall, he's a winner and he's a Tri-Champion.The only one I can remember in recent history. He's also shown incredible resilience in that he's resurgent following defeats, how many fighters have suffered the stoppages he has and have come back and won more than one title, let alone 3! While I won't rate him as number 1, he's definately in the conversation regarding the Top 10 heavies. Especially in my book!

I agree. Though I don't think Overeem should be ranked as a top 10 heavyweight in MMA based on what he's currently accomplished, he has exceptional potential, and if he wins this tournament he's a top 3 for sure, and arguably number one. All the questions will be answered in the course of this tournament - should make everyone happy.I'd say he's the favorite to win. Werdum doesn't have the striking to win on his feet or the takedowns to get it to the ground, Fedor is getting old and definitely past his prime (as well as ring rust), same for Barnett. And in winning he'll have earned his place at the top - accomplishments are what counts, not potential, and this will be a big accomplishment.

But at the end of the DAY F@ck the belts and everything else I still see FEDOR being the one to beat. Yeah Werdum beat him and yeah Overeem is the champ everywhere but Fedor is still FEDOR. But it will be EPIC and as the fights approach I see this whole GP elevating the whole game and SF showcasing some HW's that could walk into the UFC and run shop

haya1340 - No one in the world wants anything to do with Overeem's stand up or clinch. So i guess we will see if Werdum can get him on the ground. ZUFFA DRONE or not I don't think anyone could say with a straight face CAIN could stand with OVEREEM

Pshh not true i'm down, but i want a BBBBBIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGG paycheck, medical bills are expensive lol*Quick edit* I think him and cain standing would be interesting and a bit closer then people think. With that said i still give Allistair the edge and the win in that scenerio and i really like what we've seen Cain do but reem is another beast when it comes to striking.

Thats not how rankings work. It takes more than one win (great as it may be) to be considered #1, your recent fight history is all taken into account.

^This at least it's logical in my mind anywho. How can anyone still consider fedor #1 or #2 in current rankings? Lol people trip me out the guy is the greatest HW in the record books no doubt his streak will probably never be matched or beaten, and when pride was alive he fought top comp everytime he stepped in the ring, but to say he is still currently or was currently #1 when he lost to werdum is nuts. I don't think there is a clear cut #1 hw right now way to much talent out there in the world(not orgs people pay attention) so i think alot of fights have to go down this year to clear it up.Look if Fedor can run through this tourney i'm all n board for giving the guy his #1 ranking back cause thats a tough bracket but until then i'd have to say he is in the top 5 pack somewhere and then it's debatable where in that top 5 because arguments can be made all over the place about it being one way or another.
