Barnett: A trained monkey could do Dana White's job

source: mmafighting.com

Anyone that isn't UFC, he wants to cut it down, he wants to ruin it. There is a part of me that truly understands the idea of obliterating and destroying and annihilating any of your competition. But what he's working in is a subjective field ... It's entertainment. What he's working in is entertainment.

As far as the real, actual, brute aspect of fighting is concerned, he's a hindrance, he's unnecessary.

As far as fighting, you don't need anybody for fighting beside the two people who want to fight. But in this case ... you do need I believe, more than one option. You do need a Strikeforce, or any of these other organizations, because also they are often going to do the same thing you do, but just slightly different.

--

Ariel Helwani: Good or bad for the sport?

Josh Barnett: Who?

Ariel Helwani: Him (points to image of Dana White)

I think we could definitely get a trained monkey to get in there and do his job.

--

I dont care what he (Dana) thinks and I never did. I dont have any relationship with him. I don't want a relationship with a guy like that.

I think Dana White is far over the line of being unprofessional

MMA's survival isn't credited solely to Dana White nor is the UFC's.  Dana was also the one that turned Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta onto the potential to buy the UFC.  The survival of this sport and of the UFC in particular is credited to several key players including Dana, Joe Silva, Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, TUF 1's ratings success, Griffin vs. Bonnar I, SpikeTV executives that were willing to air TUF, having TUF 1 scheduled to follow WWE RAW, Full Contact Fighter, TapOuT and other sponsers that kept guys like Chuck Liddell going during the dark times, etc. the list goes on and on.  You can't remove one element and believe that MMA as we know it today and the UFC would have survived and thrived as it is doing so today.  Dana was opposed to the idea of airing a reality show to promote the UFC but he wasn't opposed to the idea of having some sort of show on Spike to promote the UFC PPVs.  He though a reality show was pandering and going to make MMA look like some sort of fad to the viewing public.  But the UFC got lucky because all the drama on TUF 1 was structured to lead up to a real fight.  And luckily the TUF finale between Griffin and Bonnar was excellent for introducing fans into the sport.  Case in point, after Leben vs. Koscheck, when the show had its highest ratings, the ratings started to dip dramatically mostly due to how many people were turned off by the boring lay-n-pray performance of Koscheck.  It was a pure gamble that TUF worked out the way it did if the TUF finale hadn't been as exciting as it was, and we all know that it's never guaranteed that a fight card will be so exciting, the UFC might have had some difficulties in continuing with airing more seasons of TUF.  Dana was wrong but his logic was sound, airing a reality show could have seriously backfired on them and the only reason it didn't was because: A) They were positioned to follow WWE RAW and were able to retain that audience which is rare because usually pro wrestling fans are only interested in pro wrestling. B) The got lucky with the TUF finale.
