Don King: Boxing could learn a lot from the UFC

by Michael David Smith | source: mmafighting.com

Why has mma blossomed over the past 5 years and boxing stayed where it's at or even lost some viewers?

Boxing doesn't have any heroes. What we're trying to do is bring heroes to the fore with this matchup of undefeated champions, the two best boxers in their category fighting each other in order to capture the imagination of the people.

Unfortunately the television networks are not broadcasting the fighters and that has been a major disappointment.

Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta have done a great job with the UFC and people like what they do. But boxing needs some more Muhammad Alis, George Foremans, Ken Nortons, Roberto Durans, fighters who would capture the imagination.

I think the UFC has done magnificent because they bring people together. That's what I am really very appreciative of. I think they can complement boxing. I have no problem with them. The more the merrier.

Both sports go together -- no reason not to be a fan of both sports. Bringing people together is what it's all about. I'm a promoter of the people, for the people and by the people. Boxing will be here yesterday today and tomorrow.

You're right, they don't have basic cable backing....they have Network backing. I'm not sure how many seasons it ran but The Contender had star coaches and a good timeslot but the problem is skills don't translate in Boxing as they do in MMA. while someone relatively new can go on TUF with their basic skillset and advance quickly if gifted, Boxing takes years of discipline, like mastering a specific martial art and thus doesn't have the immediate satisfaction that TUF viewers are accustomed to.

SpikeTV gave UFC the ability to create heros (and badguys) in the minds of the masses. Besides the limited "24/7" series, boxing has no promotional vehicle to rival the UFC's broadcasts of TUF, UFN, Unleashed, etc. So Don King is half right. Boxing has no heroes, but boxing also has no network backing liking Spike provides for the UFC.

I like both sports but to act like a sport with as rich a history and fiercely competitive as boxing is a "joke" or unworthy is fucking ridiculous. If you are referring to the politics in boxing fucking the sport up, then I agree. But to act like there is any athlete in the UFC on the level of Pacquiao or Mayweather in terms of overall skill and genetic gifts is laughable. There is not. Someday perhaps but not now.

An interesting assertion.  At what point would you estimate that the highest-paid MMA fighter will surpass the highet-paid boxer?  Floyd Mayweather earned $22.5 million for one fight against Shane Mosley this year; how long until an MMA fighter received that sort of guarantee?
