Souza retains belt, submits Lawler in 3rd

source: mmaweekly.com

Souza was aggressive early in the third with knee strikes from the clinch as Lawler countered to the body.  The Strikeforce champion took Lawler down and took his back, securing a rear naked choke that forced his opponent to tap.

“I prepared for everything.  I had a great coach and training partners.  I feel great now,” Souza said after the fight.  “I can’t wait to fight again.”

With the victory, Ronaldo Souza retained his middleweight title and remains undefeated in Strikeforce.

First off Lawler never gives up and in the first round when he had him hurt he should of took a chance and tried to finish him instead of worrying about getting submitted. I'm starting to think that sometimes training with bigger guys might wear on some of these fighters even though they think they feel great before they step in the cage and that's all he was doing before this fight.

I think Lawler gave up in the last couple seconds, but at some point everybody had to realize the finish was inevitable. Jacare basically advanced his position the entire time until the finshing choke and Lawler couldn't do anything to stop it. Not to mention Jacare was crushing Lawler with the figure-4 and there were still more than 3 minutes left in the round.

Looked like he just gave up to me. He got rear naked choked with both hands free, didnt even try to hand fight.  Never having been in that position there could be reason for it that I dont understand.  But it seems like he would have tried to control Jacare's hands. HE did do a better at defending on the ground than I thought he would when he was fresh though.

decasere - i hate guys like Souza, just laying on guys, too bad for Robbie he had him hurt in the first. Laying on guys?!? WTF are you talking about? You obviously have no understanding of grappling..... There were more set ups and transitions in that fight than I care to count. Just because a guys on top doesnt mean he's just laying there...... I can tell you've never had a black belt pressuring the fuck out of you and wearing you out. It's the most demoralizing and tiring thing ever.

I don't know how many people could handle relentless pressure coming from every angle like Jacare was putting on him. He was exhausted after trying to keep Jacare's sub attempts at bay.
