Bruce Buffer: 'It's absolutely impossible for anybody to overtake the UFC'

by James Alden | source: fighthype.com

A: What do you think about all the other organizations, such as Strikeforce, trying to start up and be successful?

BB: The fighters need avenues to fight. The UFC can only hold roughly over 200 fighters on their roster and there are way more than 200 fighters out there trying to get in the UFC. I don't care if your fighting in Strikeforce or any other organization, every single fighter out there would love to have that UFC belt wrapped around their waist. The UFC is the NFL in MMA. These other organizations provide avenues not only for the fighters to make money, but to get acclimated with the fans and also fight more. Success breeds competition and competition breeds success. I will go on record by saying this, it's absolutely impossible for anybody to overtake the UFC business-wise and it's been proven by the 50 million dollars that have been lost by two organizations in the past six years. Other organizations are realizing the amounts of money it takes to get to the level the UFC has. A lot of people are saying that the UFC doesn't pay their fighters well, but the UFC does pay their fighters very well. Do you want to know where a lot of the money goes? It's to promote the sport and to get the UFC sanctioned in the states that it hasn't already been sanctioned in, as well as other countries.

JA: What's it like to work for Dana White?

BB: He's great. He's so busy that you're lucky to get two minutes with him. The fact of the matter is if they give you a job and you do it well, and your loyal to the organization, the organization is loyal to you. We have a wonderful team and it all stems from the business maverick Dana White, along with Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, who are at the top of the pyramid, and it's flowing down to the rest of us. From the cameraman to the people who put together the Octagon, it's a well oiled machine.

NFL is synonymous with the sport of football. FactUFC is synonymous with the sport of MMA. FactFighters train to one day be in the UFC. They don't train to compete in strikeforce. FactComparing amateurs to the pros doesn't convince me of your point, just tells me you are fishing to prove your point. The current management took a company that could barely save face let alone compete where it wanted, and made it overwhelmingly profitable with the ability to compete worldwide since 06 as crazy as that seems.. Seriously doubt they will shoot themselves in the foot now. Honestly that's the only way they will ever lose the number one spot.

I certainly can't prove that, but I do know that there is nothing ordained that says the NFL has to be the most popular sport. Let's say there is a protracted lockout/work stoppage. Fans/customers start loosing their interest in the NFL, players defect to or form other leagues, etc. Again, not saying it will happen and it would take a major failure of judgment by management to let it happen.Don't think it can happen in sports? In the 1950's, the NIT was close to synonymous with college basketball; now it's far and away second rate, surpassed by the NCAA.If the UFC continues to be dominant in the MMA market it will be because the owners _don't_ believe what Buffer says and continue to innovate and refine the product and do the things that helped them build up their enormous advantages in the first place.

there absolutely is a scenario where the UFC could get overtaken. - strikeforce continues to execute- CBS warms back up to them- the 800k+ showtime fans turn into millions on CBS- strikeforce manages a couple key steals. its not impossible to see lesnar in this role, but they would need more than that.it is just a terribly unlikely scenario. really, though, it IS impossible for strikeforce (or anyone else) to overtake the UFC just by being "better". they just don't have the money coming in to catch up. UFC gets 300K PPV buys regardless of who is on the card just from their name. if everything went perfect for strikeforce, they wouldn't get close to that for the finals of their GP. and that is one PPV that they build up for months and months.

Strikeforce is the minor leagues. All they will ever achieve is being a feeder company for the Top Dogs, the UFC. Holding a UFC belt means something, it means your the best in world.
