Gil Melendez signs multi-year Strikeforce contract

Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez, has signed a new, multi-year agreement with Strikeforce.

"STRIKEFORCE is my home, they've always been like family to me and I'm looking forward to continuing my career with them," said the talented, exciting, 5-foot-9, 27-year-old protégé of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Cesar Gracie and Muay Thai legend Jongsanan Fairtex.  "There are a lot of great fights out there for me – lots of challenges. I can't wait to get back into the cage, do my thing and show the world that I'm still at the top of my game.''

Universally recognized as one of the top 155-pounders in the world, Melendez has won four in a row and five of six.

Melendez of San Francisco, by way of Santa Ana, Calif., last fought on April 17, 2010, retaining the STRIKEFORCE belt with a dominant, lopsided five-round decision over Japanese superstar Shinya Aoki in Nashville, Tenn., live on The CBS Television Network.

"I'm healthy again and excited about fighting again real soon,'' the personable, charismatic Melendez said. "It doesn't matter who I fight. I just want to get back in there and rip.''

As a fan of mma I'm disappointed, after his last interview I thought he'd sign with the ufc. But if he's happy with SF then be it.

It's not always UFC or nothing some people just want to see the best guys fight eachother, and in this weight class (and every other one but heavy) the UFC has 95% of the top guys. If Strikeforce had the best guys I would want him to stay.

All these Caesar Gracie guys talk so much shit about they are the best in the world but they won't fight in the ufc. Not saying ufc has the best fighters but they do at ww and lw. I gotta give shields alot of credit for not ducking big comp.

I like Strikeforce, but they do lack depth in their fighter roster. A talented guy like Melendez will soon not have legitimate competition at Strikeforce's lightweight division.

He seems to be rewarding a company that treated him well. Nothing wrong with that.
