Rick Story grinds out decision victory over Thiago Alves for upset win

source: mmamania.com

Two welterweight bangers took to the cage tonight, May 28, 2011, at UFC 130: "Rampage vs. Hamill" live on pay-per-view, when Thiago Alves and Rick Story got dirty in "Sin City."

And it delivered ... kind of.

The "Dolce Diet" may have served to get Alves down to the 170-pound limit but it couldn't get him ready for the grappling prowess Story brought to the table tonight.

LOL I said this exact thing out loud when he said that. Seriously? He literally spent the WHOLE fight trying to take Alves down.

i guess stillmatic is right. not everyone can be champs. don't matter how good you are. champions are just a little better. technically, and mentally. alves don't have any of them. except for his thai boxing. good example is fitch. he is a very good fighter. but, don't see him being champ.

true but you'd think Alves is experienced enough to know this too^

Alves came in with a horrible gameplan and it cost him. He was clearly the more talented fighter in the cage, but talent isn't always enough. He should fire everyone who's in his corner, seriously. Someone should of been in his ear telling him to take the center of the cage, and not back-up into the fence where it becomes impossible to sprawl against a guy who obviously is going to shoot for takedowns all night.

Either way, seems Alves is not the same post-surgery or whatever. I thought he was gonna be the strong #2 guy at WW for a while. He schooled Kos, i think he was too weak against Fitch esp for his first fight after the layoff.

That's not the point. My point is alves needs to show that he has actually improved. He hasn't gotten any better in wrestling he gets taken down all time it's sad. He's ranked 3 or 4 when in reality he's behind any wrestler with a pedigree. Also why Americans own almost all the titles and are well on their way to dominating mma

I think in most cases that is true. However, you must do it in order to have any chance of long term success in the UFC. If you don't want to put in the hard work and focus then you should sign with a lesser promotion. Then again he would get beat at the lower levels against some of the great wrestlers that are coming up waiting for a UFC call.

Everybody wants to be champion, doesn't mean everyone can do it. That goes the same for having elite wrestling. He could work on his wrestling as much as he wants and he still won't be as good at it as someone like GSP.

"Also ask rampage how to stop a take down and know how to strike. Like stoping hamill was easy over and over."Rampage comes from a wrestling base and competed at one of the best JUCO programs in the country. Alves does not have his background and it shows. Brazilians are trying to learn MT to complement their BJJ but they do not want to put in the hard work needed to improve their wrestling skills. High level wrestling can still beat a BJJ/MT combination in most cases.
