Dana White: International TUF Grand Prix is my dream

by Steven Marrocco | source: mmajunkie.com

Back in 2008, UFC officials announced plans to host an event in the Philippines in mid-2009, and an open workout with Chuck Liddell drew more than 4,000 fans. Brandon Vera, whose father is Filipino, also held one of his own that drew 10,000 attendees.

The plans for an event in the country ultimately were scrapped due to the global financial crisis. But The Philippines is now likely to host first international TUF.

"We're like one piece away from finishing (TUF in PI)," White told reporters following UFC 130. And his plans are larger still.

An international "TUF" tournament could not only crown the best up-and-comer from beyond U.S. borders, but perhaps heighten interest from fans that want to cheer on their respective countries.

"It's like the World Cup of 'TUF,'" White said. "Dude, if we can nail that one, that's my dream."

Seriously, I'm glad Dana is thinking big picture like this. There's no reason to think the success of TUF couldn't be replicated on an international scale, particularly in underdeveloped markets. Reality TV is just as popular in some countries as it is here if not more so. PPV is a very small part of the equation. If the UFC could get TV deals in multiple nations via TUF, PPV would almost be rendered obsolete. Rather than lose money promoting shows abroad and having to export the whole UFC team, exporting the brand on a show where you don't have to pay the fighters and can play up their characters/story is brilliant. Having it culminate in an international GP is the icing on the cake. I get shivers just thinking about it.

International TUF airing in America and around the world would be amazing! One guy from like 16 countries, that's genius. With good scouting of prospects around the world this will work and fans response will be nothing but positive. I believe all the hate toward TUF is based on the quality of competition picked for the teams. It's supposed to be the top 16 prospects throughout the world getting a slot on that show. That really was the down fall of TUF.When you think about it UFC gives us 2 Grand Prix tournaments per year with 1 fight airing weekly over the period of 3 months. On paper that is a fight fans dream! The problem is quality of fighters, plain and simple. Do some good scouting Dana and you'll have a very successful International season!

A TUF GP? Who cares? What a waste of time and money. TUF had its run. It's time to let it die.

We can't even find decent prospects in AMERICA with this thing any more, what will we find in the Phillipines? Also, don't we agree TUF needs a major overhaul? The show is fundamentally stale, what's so exciting about two stale loaves of bread as opposed to one?
