Schaub vs. Nogueira winner 'in the mix' for HW title

Brendan Schaub thinks that beating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 134: "Rio" from the HSBC Arena on Aug. 27 in Brazil would make him the heavyweight division's number one contender.

He apparently is not alone.

UFC President Dana White today (June 16, 2011) told media members at the UFC 134 pre-fight press conference the winner of Schaub vs. Nogueira is "in the mix" for the heavyweight title hunt -- which could be Dana-speak for "I still don't know what the hell I'm going to do with Frank Mir."

Despite some big names, the UFC heavyweight division is surprisingly anemic, which means that either "The Hybrid" or "Minotauro" might get first dibs on the strap by default.

When Mir lost to Vera, he was no longer what the UFC marketed him as. He lost 2 out of 3 fights after his accident and the win in between was a UD, not some spectacular finish. I use to root for Mir until the UFC started cramming him down the fans' throats. I always wonder what it is Mir has or knows that the UFC felt they owed him a title shot, because he sure as hell didn't earn it.

yeah, this is sad, Schaub needs to get his head out of his ass. He hasnt done anything notable other than be a nice highlight for big ol Roy. Gonzaga...okay win...i guess. I dont know if this is Schaub being delusional or a really sad statement about the current strength of the HW division. He beats up another old, over the hill vet (note: Im a big Cro Cop and Nog fan, but lets face it, they are way over the hill)and he thinks its an accomplishment. Put him with Mir or Browne or Kongo even, but he doesnt deserve to be that close to the top. I do think things will get interesting once the SF HWs start migrating over, I put Werdum, Overeem, and Barnett(even though most likely well never see him in the UFC) way ahead of Schaub.

The UFC trying hype up Schuab as one of top contenders for the title is ridiculous and once again shows the lack of depth of the UFC HW roster.I would really hate it if this guy beats big Nog. But seriously, that should not warrant a title shot. Bringing in the Strikeforce heavyweights would change the whole landscape of the division. I think everyone in the Grand Prix (other than Arlovski) takes out Schuab and except for Brett Rogers, I can see all of them being a very serious threat to Cain and JDS.

so in the ufc beating a past his prime pride vet you are douche bag but if you do so outside of ufc it makes you a top ranking(werdum) the heavyweight division as a whole lacks depth you are a fucking idiot or simply trying to be the cool guy claiming the strikeforce fighters are far superior maybe these ufc guys should get some wins against 205ers and lower ranked guys so they could get some respect in your guys eyes

you people are fucking stupid in the mix doesnt mean next in line for a title shot it simply means the winner gets a fight with the top contenders of the division

Once the Showtime/Strike-force contracts end, the UFC will have a stacked heavyweight division :DDD

I'm honestly disgusted with Schaub's fast tracking to the top, calling out over the hill name fighters and saying a win over a very past prime Nog makes him a number one contender. No Budo here folks move on. At the very least Schaub should have to fight Mir after Nog for a title fight. Although I'd prefer he have to fight the loser of JDS/Cain after the Mir fight. Meanwhile bring in some of those Strikeforce heavies because the division seems to have disappeared in a couple weeks.
