Barry: Kongo not an elite striker

by E. Spencer Kyte | source:

Working with Morgan and the big boys at DeathClutch have helped him change those thoughts.

"Now, Cheick Kongo just had back surgery? I'm going to look for a scar, and I'm going to find it and bite it. I'm going to pick him up and do the backbreaker from WWF and I'm going to try to finish this dude to the point that he's never going to want to fight again ever. That's just the mentality that these guys have, and they mean it. Really, when it comes down to it, it makes the fight less intimidating.

"If it came down to it, he would do the same to me; they all would. If they knew any better, they all would. They would get in the ring and try to hit me in the head so I could never stand up again. If they knew any better they would because if they don't, I'm gonna do it to them. If I don't, I'm going to do it to you the next time we fight. I'm going to kick you in the head and it's going to be over with. That's going to be bad news; bad things are going to come from that and everybody knows that, except for Joey Beltran."

Barry lets out a long torrent of laughter at the mention of his last opponent and the memory of his last fight.

AFAIK Kongo was actually set to make his K-1 debut at one of their shows. I think it might have been the 2006 GP that Challid Arrab won. But he was then asked to fight Aldana in the UFC and he said so long K-1.....

Yet the nuthuggers are more excited about his "Viking dance".

Kongo should win this fight.  This is the type of fight that Kongo thrives in; against mid level competition with no real ground threat.  Should be entertaining though.

I think you people here are being too hard on Barry. For comparison, why is everyone so high on Mitrione, when Mitrione had a very very close fight with Beltran, including getting rocked by Beltran - when Barry worked Beltran, beat him up and was never in real trouble? He lost the first round due to clich and dirty boxing but was never hurt. Barry definitely had the more impressive performance against a common opponent - yet Mitrione is this elite prospect and Barry a disappointment? It just so happens that Beltran is tough as hell to finish. Some guys in MMA just don't get finished.Barry's performance against Cro Cop was alarming in terms of his lack of killer instinct, but he did break his hand and foot so I'll give him a little slack.I think Kongo is a tough matchup for Barry, since Kongo is very strong with good takedowns and GNP. Kongo has shitty defensive wrestling but his takedowns are very powerful. If Barry can beat a guy with takedowns like Kongo then he's in good shape. Barry is older, but Mitrione and Cormier are around his age as well. I don't think Barry will ever be a true contender but there's nothing wrong with being a top 15ish guy.

I agree, Barry is nothing special at all and has been horrible to watch
