Cris Cyborg now a free agent

source: cagepotato.com

Cris “Cyborg” Santos is officially a free agent, which either means that Strikeforce was unwilling to pay her what she felt she was worth, or that Zuffa has decided against continuing to promote women’s MMA under the SF banner. Either way, it’s a blow to the promotion’s women’s division.

A source we spoke to today received confirmation from Cyborg’s management that Zuffa’s exclusive negotiation period with the 10-1 Curitiba, Brazil fighter ended yesterday and that the parent company of Strikeforce and the UFC failed to come to terms with the Strikeforce women’s middleweight champ before she became a free agent at the stroke of midnight.

We’re told that Cris is in serious discussions with a promotion that we’ve been asked not to name until the deal is finalized and that she could have a new contract in place as early as this weekend.

Don't understand the logic in letting Cyborg go or saying Zuffa wants women's mma to die when they just signed Rousey to like a 4 fight contract. Rousey's set to wreck bishes and will be on the cusp of a title shot in short order. It's going to suck if she walks through the contenders only to end up fighting (Carano) for a vacant title.

It is business as usual unfortunately, think of how many other champs the UFC lost because of contract disputes, BJ, Couture twice, Tito, etc

Bottom line, this is another instance of the Zuffa brass tryin to use their near monopoly over MMA to bully fighters they don't NEED to have into accepting whatever contracts they want. And basically they're right to do so. Cyborg will probably keep busy and fight in a bunch of little promotions that pay her well, but at the end of the day, she will not find much competition outside of SF and will be forced to go back to the bargaining table with even less leverage this time and accept the plautry second offer Zuffa makes her. It sucks for womens MMA and Cyborg, but Zuffa will get her if they want her, and most people won't even notice she was missing.

Womens MMA is way too dependent on a handful of fighters. there really needs to be like 5 times more quality fighters for Womens MMA to have a chance to survive long term.

I agree. If the product does not sell, no one will watch. It does not matter how good it is. The only reason the WNBA still exists, is because it is subsidized by the NBA's revenues. David Stern keeps the league afloat with play money from the NBA. Zuffa would not do the same.

who gives a shit about a bunch of assholes throwing a ball around?cyborg is not worth even $50,000 a fight, so if she was trying to get crazy money, then people need to stop bitching.pay in mma is based on how big of a draw you are. period.remember when werdum wanted to much money after jds embarrassed him and the ufc let him go?just because zuffa does not want to pay her too much money does not mean they will kill off wmma in all zuffa run orgs.if SF does fold, i think IF the ufc were to do wmmma, they would start off with only the 135 pound class as that is the deepest class and with girls like maloes, miesha, nunes (if she is that weight) and possibly felice they could have some good matches.
