Demetrious Johnson not Bowles may get next title shot vs. Cruz

by John Morgan | source:

"They do this to me every press conference," White joked with UFC matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby when questioned by as to whether Brian Bowles would be next in line to snag a shot at the 135-pound belt,. "They want me to make the whole next card."

"Could be Demetrious Johnson" replied Shelby, the matchmaker responsible for booking the UFC's featherweight and bantamweight matchups.

Bowles appeared to injure his hand again during his Saturday night win over Mizugaki, but White seemed optimistic that the former WEC champ may have actually escaped unscathed.

Meanwhile, the 5-foot-3 Johnson, often referred to as a future champion of the soon-to-come flyweight division, has been doing just fine at 135 pounds. Johnson is dealing with his own health problems after suffering a fractured fibula in his May win over Torres, though he is set to ask for doctors' clearance later this month.

So in short, the answer to what's next for Cruz isn't clear just yet.

Cruz would win easily. I don't think the Mouse is taking him down and I don't think he can live with him on his feet. Bowles has a bigger game and I think stands a better chance, but he also needs to get that hand fixed up if it can be fixed up. Robin.

Bowles has won 2 fights since losing the title a full 15 months ago.  That's hardly "too soon".    His only loss ever is to the current champ.  He's finished EVERY opponent he's faced except Mizugaki, and that includes finishing former champ Torres -- who many people believe actually beat Demetrius. Mighty Mouse on the other hand, has a gift/controversial victory over Torres, quality wins over Kid and Damacio, and a loss to Brad picket.  He's also taken 4 of his last fights to decision. I guess you could make arguments for both guys, but Bowles, if healthy, has clearly done more to EARN it.

I agree here that Mighty Mouse should be next. It's too soon to give Bowles a rematch, the division isnt SUPER stacked, so if they gave the most recent former title-holder a second shot and he loses, the third chance won't be anytime soon. Gotta keep the contenders lined up and plentiful.

Menjivar will be champ after he gets through his next fight in devastating fashion. Once he beats Cruz Lloyd will promote him to Purple belt

Bowles deserves the SHOT

Unless Bowles is truly injured, any BUT him getting the next title shot would be a travesty.  The fight at UFC 132 should have been his.  I understand they gave it to Uriah "poster boy" Faber becuase he sells tickets -- but he had done very little at 135lbs to deserve that fight.    The loss proved he isn't on that level yet at this weight class.
