Cris Cyborg manager says deal done, SF says it isn't

by Kelsey Mowatt | source:

Despite conflicting reports recently as to whether Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos has departed ways with Strikeforce,  her manager Master Rudimar Fedrigo has confirmed to FCF today that the 145lb. champion has renewed her contract with the promotion.

Although the Chute Boxe founder did not provide any details regarding the contract, Fedrigo did state that he is “very happy” that the fighter is continuing on with Strikeforce.

Late last week Fedrigo informed FCF that he and Santos were still in talks with Strikeforce, despite reports that negotiations between the two parties had broken down.

However, Strikeforce officials say the deal is not done.

If Strikeforce women's middleweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos has signed a new deal with the promotion, company officials aren't saying so.

A representative told  that Strikeforce "doesn't have any official word on the contract status of 'Cyborg' at this time."

Following the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce in March, many questioned the MMA powerhouse's commitment to women's MMA. However, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has continually reiterated that the promotion will continue promoting female fighters. In fact, a major title fight between Coenen and top contender Miesha Tate co-headliners this month's "Strikeforce/M-1: Fedor vs. Henderson" event, and recent signees have included U.S. Olympian Ronda Rousey, veteran Julie Kedzie and Sarah D'Alelio, among others.

I love that the main page used the exact same picture of Cyborg for the headline earlier today when the headline read "Strikeforce lost the soul of women's MMA".

Since Shelby took over less than two months ago they've signed Ronda Rousey, Sarah D'Alelio, Alexis Davis, re-signed Julie Kedzie, and possibly re-signed Shayna Baszler, while at least trying to get fights for everyone on them and almost every woman they already had under contract (still haven't heard of any fights offered for Akano, Finney, Shana Olsen, Carina Damm, or Kerry Vera, but everyone else has had a fight scheduled at some point since Shelby took over matchmaking duties, with some injuries her and there). Not to go too far off, but Finney vs. Akano and Damm vs. Vera both make sense. If Finney or Vera pull the upset, or at least make the fight highly competitive and fun, then keep them. If not they really don't belong in SF. Maybe do Olsen vs. Germaine de Randamie or something.

If nothing else, there are literally dozens of opponents better than Jan Finney.Ronda Rousey is a potential world-beater and is a phenomenal prospect, but right now she's 2-0 and absolutely needs more experience. At least three more fights.Amanda Nunes could fight her sooner but I am under the impression she wants to take at least one more fight at 135 before moving back up to 145 to face Cyborg.Hiroko Yamanaka could fight her in a few months if she's not bound to her deal with JEWELS. She has a legit resume, is 5'11" and freaking huge (and not bad to look at either), and has good boxing, clinchwork, and TDD. Also, she's actually called Cyborg out in the past. She still won't win, but she'd be a fair sight better than some of Cyborg's other opponents. If she got a training camp in with a high-level gym, or even just managed to convince AACC to let her train there if she didn't want to leave the country, I think she'd be a lot better off.So yeah, Rousey is best down the line but they need to let her develop a bit first. Nunes would be the best choice today but she doesn't want to fight her, at least not right away. Yamanaka is someone they could have her fight right away if she was under contract, and it wouldn't be an appalling mismatch like her last fight, but she's not under contract.Sean Shelby's been signing a lot of talent lately (more at 135 than 145 but still), so I guess we'll see.

It's "parted ways", as "departed" is reserved for someone that has died.
