'Big Nog' upsets, stops Schaub in 1st round

by Maggie Hendricks | source: yahoo.com

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira showed that he still has plenty of fight left in him, as he scored a first-round TKO over Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 on Saturday night. Noguiera's win came after an 18-month layoff following a loss to current UFC champion Cain Velasquez.

As the bout started, Schaub immediately relied on the clinch, but Nogueira was able to push him off and return to stand-up. Schaub landed uppercuts early, slowing Nogueira after each punch landed. But Nogueira stayed aggressive and wobbled Schaub with a two-punch combination, then followed up with strikes until Schaub fell to the ground. Referee Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight at 3:09.

A big improvement was that Nogs head movement was back. He was slipping and ducking, unlike in the Velazquez fight. So it looks like the surgeries did help. And Nog beat the stuffing out of Josh Barnett on the feet. Nog had both Herring and Barnett going for takedowns. His boxing is very good for a HW.

Very happy for Nog. I predicted the win for him, but not like that. I'd love to see him get his rematch with Mir, or a fight with Lesnar.

I'm so hyped. Was such an exciting moment. As far as what should be next, I'd rather see a few big fights for Big Nog before retirement than see him make a title run. It could be cool seeing him fight Hendo again.
