Frank Shamrock: MMA isn't a sport yet

by Cameron Conaway | source:

I recently had an hour-long Skype session with MMA legend Frank Shamrock. What was meant to be a conversation about Muay Thai training facilities here in Thailand quickly veered off-topic as the former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion and I spoke about the recent, landmark UFC/FOX network TV deal, and all the hype in the MMA world about how this officially makes MMA mainstream, on par with the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL.

“But it’s not just like those sports,” said Shamrock. “I love MMA. I credit it with saving my life. I think it can and will change the world for the better. But is it a sport? I don’t think so.

“As dear as it is to me,” Shamrock continued, “MMA is still this thing in between sport and spectacle. No, MMA isn’t a sport. Not yet.”

it is true you hardly hear a peep out of Fudd about Mo Smith, the man who changed the way mma was played forever in the ufc brand, but maybe they want people to think it all started with tats and motorcycles and people on steroids.

mma is a sport, its a sport as much as womens basketball is a sport. and if they piggyback off of the alpha males in the nfl, the way the women in the wnba did with the nba, one day they will be as awesome as wnba.

if it were a sport there would be some sort of system to determine contenders. since it is only who dana wants (i.e. who he didn't threaten or blackball) then there is no way mma can be considered a sport. the bullshit twitter battles and the wwe antics will always remove sport from the product.

Not sure why this is news worthy/causing an uproar, mma has never been a true sport (although it has gotten closer to being one in many ways)Dana can pull someone off the street and have them fight for a title if he (and said person on the street) wanted

How could MMA be a sport before UFC when the term MMA was invested by Jeff Blatnick in 1998 because he was trying to get athletic commissions to regulate a sport without a name.
