UFC 135 cut list; who needs a win?

by Ben Fowlkes | source: mmafighting.com

Nate Diaz (13-7, 8-5 UFC)
Who he's facing: Takanori Gomi
Why he's in danger: Don't look now, but the younger Diaz brother has lost two straight in the UFC after being outgrappled by both Dong Hyun Kim and Rory MacDonald. There's no shame in losing to either of those beasts, but three in a row is still a dangerous place to be, so he needs this one against Gomi

Matt Hughes (45-8, 18-6 UFC)
Who he's facing: Josh Koscheck
Why he's in danger: Okay, so Hughes isn't really looking at a potential cut per se, but rather a contract that might not be renewed once this final fight is in the books. And honestly? That's not such a bad thing.

Takanori Gomi (32-7-1 NC, 1-2 UFC)
Who he's facing: Nate Diaz
Why he's in danger: Gomi managed to sandwich a knockout win over Tyson Griffin in between losses to Kenny Florian and Clay Guida, so it's not as if he's been fighting chumps since coming to the UFC.

Takeya Mizugaki (14-6-2, 1-1 UFC)
Who he's facing: Cole Escovedo
Why he's in danger: Right off I'll just say it -- Mizugaki should consider himself lucky to have made the cut when the UFC absorbed the WEC.

Cole Escovedo (17-7, 0-1 UFC)
Who he's facing: Takeya Mizugaki
Why he's in danger: Escovedo's career has been a rollercoaster ride in more ways than one. He's been up and down in weight, while also following impressive winning streaks with strings of losses.

I also think Hunt needs a win very badly as well. I know HW isn't the deepest division but the guy needs a W badly.

yeah I don't know why they didn't list Tehuna, Romero or Hunt. Any of those guys that lose will probably be cut(unless they put on a fight of the night performance). Also I think they'll keep Nate even with a loss. Sure Cole Miller and Joe Lauzon are fairing better but how do you think Diaz would of fared if he had been facing TJ O'Brien, Gabe Ruediger, Curt Warburton and on he probably would be faring just as well as Stout and Cole.

I see Nate having trouble keeping his job if he loses this fight. He had lost 3 of 4 fights at 155 and moved up to 170 won 2 fights then lost 2 straight. Now he is dropping back down?He is currently 3-5 over his last 8 fights. If he goes to 3-6 over his last nine fights TUF winner or not thats hard to justify. Specially considering guys like Cole, Maynard, and Lauzon who where all on his season of TUF have done much better since the show then he has overall.

IF they lose, I would think the following will be cut:Mark Hunt, Cole Escovedo, James TeHuna, and maybe the loser of Gomi/Diaz.

Win or lose, Gomi will be around, most likely for the Japan event. I see Koscheck beating Hughes but no surprise to see Matt retire afterwards if that should happen. He has had a great career and has nothing left to prove.

I highly, HIGHLY doubt any of them would get cut with a loss. The only one I can see realistically getting cut is Escovedo.
