Cruz beats Johnson to retain bantamweight title

by Michael David Smith | source:

Dominick Cruz showed once again on Saturday night that he's the best 135-pound fighter in mixed martial arts, beating Demetrious Johnson by unanimous decision to retain the UFC bantamweight title.

It was an exciting, action-packed fight, and a bout that demonstrated just how ruthlessly effective Cruz's fighting style is. The win improved Cruz's professional MMA record to 19-1, and there's no question that he's one of the best fighters in the world, in any weight class.

"It was a tough fight -- the kid's got a sick pace," Cruz said of Johnson. "He didn't surprise me. I was ready for a wicked pace. I knew I had to slow him down by using my strength and my size."

The judges scored it 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46 for Cruz.

If Mighty Mouse was bigger, he'd be in a different weight class.....

I dont like fights between tiny guys where you know from round 1 that it will go to decision.

I don't really get the hate. Has Mighty Mouse ever been finished? He almost was tonight. Cruz was able to both nullify Johnson and get his own offense off. There was also plenty of offense. A knee that started heavy swelling that was followed up with accurate punches to that spot. 2 big belly to back suplexes, 1 of which was transitioned straight into back mount. Choke attempts. Full mount with strikes being thrown. At least 3 hip throws from the wizzer. There was a decent amount of clinch exchanges with knees. I'm really not understanding what people want to see.

Watching Cruz fight is frustrating, his suplexes were cool, but he almost looked like he freaked out after he couldnt get the RNC, and his "footwork" is like watching Keith Jardine. It's working for him, but damn, Im just not a fan really.

Cruz is like Prince Naseem all over again. DJ showed tonight that matching his speed isn't enough. A grinder will be able to get it done. Someone who can eat shots and keep walking forward to make you pay either with wrestling or strikes.  135 needs a Korean zombie.  I wonder if Jung could make 135?

C'mon man. Cruz may have passed his guard but other then the sub attempts he didn't really do anything but that. He was too afraid to stand and did absolutely nothing but look for the takedown the whole fight. He had a nice transition to the back, but Mighty Mo's escapes where better then Cruz's takedowns, those german suplex's were nice though, credit to cruz for those. But C'mon Cruz is definitely not a very exciting champ, Damn even GSP's average performance was mroe exciting then this FREE title fight.

I see a lot of people talking about it being boring and I would have to totally disagree. It was one of the fastest paced 25 minute fights you will ever see in the UFC. It definitely wasn't lay n' pray, Cruz constantly passed Johnson's guard, took his back a few times, had him mounted at one point, and I thought he came very close to finishing Johnson w/ a rear naked + body triangle combo. The only argument some of these people who don't appreciate Cruz's dominant performance is that Johnson seemed to never have a chance offensively while Cruz never really has a chance to KO anybody these days. I guess it's all relative to what each viewer is looking for in a UFC championship bout. I will admit to wishing that Johnson would have been Torres instead throughout the fight, but that's only bc I think he matches up pretty well w/ Cruz and is a Legend in the game to me.
