Gracie to Penn: Don't be scared homie, let's go five rounds

by Ariel Helwani | source:

UFC president Dana White has already stated that the new UFC 137 main event between BJ Penn and Nick Diaz will not be a five-round fight because "they haven't trained for five rounds."

However, Diaz's manager and trainer Cesar Gracie thinks otherwise.

"If they can't fight five rounds against each other, how are they going to fight five rounds against GSP?," Gracie said.

"Dana is good with it," he said. "We've agreed to it. If BJ agrees to it, we'll make it happen."

"These guys have to prove they are ready. These guys are fighters. BJ has always said he's a warrior. ... The old school days of MMA, back when it was NHB, they fought forever.

"Don't be scared, homie. Let's make it five rounds."

i think i misunderstood your comment...challenging someone to a 5 round fight means you hope your opponent will gas in the 4th and 5th rounds so you can win that way

That doesn't clarify anything. If you challenge someone to a 5 round fight does that mean that you don't try to finish for 4 rounds? What's the point of challenging someone to 5 rounds?

No disrespect to anyone, I just feel that the camp should be more concerned with getting their fighters to play ball on the PR side of the house before they start issuing challenges.

did you watch edgar/maynard I? maynard hurt edgar badly and went full his own confession, he was basically done for the rest of the the second fight, maynard hurt edgar badly again in the first, attacked, but reserved himself with the clear intention of saving some gas in case edgar didnt get finished...yes, at the end of the day, edgar still won, but this is just one example of how pacing in a 5 round fight is very different than a 3 round fight for a top level fighter
