Hioki wins split decision over Roop

by Gene Mrosko | source: mmamania.com

The hype was heavy for the Japanese fighting sensation, as he came into the bout ranked number three in the world at 145-pounds. But could he pay it off against the always game Roop?

Unfortunately, no, he could not. But he did earn himself a split decision victory, much to the chagrin of the crowd inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

This one will be hotly contested for some time to come. Hioki clamed in the post-fight interview that Japanese MMA is not dead. After this bout, he might find more than a few arguments to the contrary.

He beat marlon Sandro in Japan.Like Rogan said, there is a lot of speculation why Japanese fighters lose in the US.To me it's psychological. these guys deflate like crazy psychologically when they fight in front of their colonial masters.Enson said it was psychological as well.If same fight happened in japan, Hioki would win EASILY.it's weird.to put it simply japnaese are HIGHLY affected by hometown advantage.

Roop made it a great fight.Hioki made it kinda boring.Glad it was a split decision because at least then it reflects the closeness of the fight.

Just my opinion. I had heard so much about him being a top 5 featherweight and I was dissapointed.

it was surprising to see how hioki struggled in this fight yet he dominated marlon sando like nothing.
