Dana White: I blame referee Dan Stell 100%

by John Morgan | source: mmajunkie.com

UFC 139 was full of impressive MMA action, not all of it was conducted according to UFC president Dana White's liking.

White watched first-hand as referee Dan Stell was slow to halt a Chris Weidman D'Arce choke that rendered Tom Lawlor unconscious.

"You're a referee; You should know when somebody is out," White said at the UFC 139 post-event in press conference. "Get your ass in there and stop the fight. Same thing with the armbar Friday night in Las Vegas (Ronda Rousey vs. Julia Budd). Standing way over there while she's putting an armbar on? You get in there, and you stop the fight as soon as you can so these guys don't get hurt."

"I'm definitely not blaming (the ref)," Weidman said. "I can't really see what he was watching. I definitely felt him go out, and I was telling [Stell] that he was out, but as a ref, he can't believe what I'm saying because I could just be trying to get a cheap victory with that ... [Lawlor] was definitely out for a little long, but I'm glad that he's alright."

"I blame [Stell]," White said. "I blame him 100 percent."

I warch Herb Dean stop a fight when a deep arm bar was in and the elbow was being pushed to hyper extension. No tap and that would have snapped.

From what I've heard around is that Budd told Kim Winslow she was double jointed and to let it go further if she was caught in a sub. Guess she wished she was triple jointed now. Happened to my left arm caught in a armbar, acting the tough guy and not tapping. Now I can't take 75% the extension in that arm I used to(at best). And I rehabbed it correctly, but the damage was done. Don't wish that on any fighter. Hope JB recovers 100% How about instead of one big ref in the ring, who can only catch so much without being in the middle of the fighters, put two small refs to catch the action. Like watching guys grabbing the fence when the ref is on the other side for example. Or one ref inside the cage or ring, and a couple outside. To make it fair and safe. Almost like in Pride, but give them authority to stop the action, take pts ect. Might help stop situations like last Sat and many others. Not like refs are expensive(sadly in lots of cases).

Agreed 100%. While I don't agree with an earlier post about needing a brown belt to be a ref, it is absolutely necessary to have pretty extensive knowledge o the ground game.

I see nothing wrong with either stoppage.

The lack of knowledge of the submission game fucks up judging and is plain dangerous for refs. A person with knowledge of subs would have probably stopped both earlier. However I have never heard a defeated fighter say the ref stopped the fight too late.

Chimonos Revenge - smac3dot0 - you're pretending everyone on the UG is of the same opinion, thats the flaw in your entire logic. you haven't shown an example of hypocrisy. your logic is flawed and incomplete.

Its the same issue. People just like to jump on anything Dana says, even though he is saying exactly what has been said on here 100's of times.

that's not "hypocrisy" that's "different people having different opinions about different events".
