Patricky Freire took on the un-retired Kurt Pellegrino.  This one was short and bittersweet - Freire caught Pellegrino early with a left that dropped him, then when Freire moved in and was trying to finish the fight, the ref stepped in and stopped it.

There was some controversy over this for the simple reason that Pellegrino wasn't out, wasn't turtled up, and was still trying to fight.  In fact, he was in the middle of grabbing a single when the ref called a halt to the fight.  While it's true that it was probably only a matter of time before Freire really did knock him out, Pellegrino certainly deserved the chance to turn things around and stay in the fight.

He was very classy afterward, though, didn't complain about the stoppage, said many nice things about Freire, and then announced his retirement from MMA.

Hats off to Batman.

Pellegrino: I will fight no more forever:

"I started my career in Atlantic City, I wanted to end it in Atlantic City, too."

"I was thrilled (about fighting Patricky). I knew he was super tough and I would have to train hard for him. I really did train hard. I lost fair and square. This will be the last time you ever see me fight, again."

"This isn't the way I wanted it to end. You know, walking up the stairs I wanted to honestly tell you that you guys would never ever ever see me fight again unless you're watching old tapes. It's just getting a little hard. I missed my daughter's first words, which were ‘dad,' preparing for this fight. I don't know what I want to do, but as of right now I'm done. I think I'm done... I don't know what to do. I wanted to retire today."

"BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU DESERVES TO BE RECOGNIZED BY JUDGESI was disappointed to hear the boos following Bellator 59's first main-card fight, Marcin Held vs. Phillipe Nover. That fight was scored exactly as should have been. The 19-year-old took some shots but landed some good ones as well. He went after an insane amount of submissions. The kid spent a lot of time on his back but worked all three rounds. Held got a few takedowns and controlled the fight for more then 90 percent of the time. Yes – even from the ground and on his back, he controlled the fight. While waiting on the judges, I was thinking how it sucks that Held would lose such a good fight because of MMA's scoring system. It's good to see that mixed martial arts does, once in a while, acknowledge that more then boxing and top game is involved in this sport. Brazilian jiu-jitsu should be a bigger part of scoring.Bruce HalesPocomoke, Md."i got that from i totally agree, i was thinking Held really won but the judges will pick Nover; but when Held won i thought "wow, they finally got one right"the fight was even on the feet, and top or bottom, Held was going for subs and Nover was defending the whole time.

^^^ Why would anyone intentionally kick another fighter in the junk? Why intentionally screw yourself out of the possibility of winning a tourney after making it that far? Why intentionally open yourself up for a DQ, NC, and a possible fine/suspension? Cindy

i disagree cindy--prindle was laying on his back with his legs spread...he was standing right in front of him--could have kicked him anywhere in the thigh he wanted to--it was straight up a kick in the nuts--intentional....

dude i was there--if that was an accidental kick to the groin, then you'll believe that i became a blonde by falling into a bottle of peroxide. i can watch man on man carnage like slicing up a side of beef...,but i couldn't look at the pain prindle was in...i said to nover's cousin--he needs to go to a hospital--i wouldn't be surprised if he looses a testicle....he was wiping away tears he was in so much pain...there was nothing he could do to have any of it disapate after 5 minutes....

I had VIP seats right behind rebney and smith...i was sitting with nover's cousin...we both thought that he took the last two rounds...smith thought he took all three.

I don't know if you're joking or not, but I thought Thiago hit him under the butt as well.  It looked like Prendle at first laughed and said, what the heck about getting kicked in the butt....
